Before Sienna Miller hit the headlines for her personal life, she was making waves in the fashion world for her “boho” style. Her fashion in the film Alfie seemed to have a direct influence on her personal style – though she helped style her character, Nikki, with clothes from her own closet. Here’s how to get Sienna’s boho look from Alfie: MAKE UP, HAIR & JEWELRY - While keeping her make up on her skin and lips minimal, Sienna went all out on her eyes. Think smoky black eyes, long false eyelashes and heavy black eyeliner. - When it comes to jewelry, you want to go for gypsy-style earrings with beads and large hoops. Also spend some money on a silver pendant that can be worn on a heavy, thick chain and some bangles. Go for 60s silver. - Sienna’s hairstyle in Alfie was excellent – long, wavy blonde hair (with extensions) and thick, choppy bangs. Her hair was a beautiful, honey-white blonde.
CLOTHES & ACCESSORIES - Invest in a wide-brimmed, floppy felt hat. This adds a bohemian touch to any outfit plus it emphasizes the bangs. For those days when it’s not appropriate to wear a hat, tie a printed scarf around your hair. - When it comes to sleeping/seducing, go for silk camis, boy briefs or your man’s shirt. - The ultimate in boho chic is a fur gilet (try faux fur!) – wear it over your leather jackets, your slouchy dresses or with a pair of jeans – it’s the most versatile piece in your closet! - Slinky dresses with mod prints or sequined edges are perfect – anything 60s/70s is a Sienna/Nikki must! - For days out roaming the city, wear a pair of skin-tight leather boots that go over the knee – either with spray-on jeans or mini dresses.
Dustie Doll is a fantastic new line created by Dustie Smith, who recently took the time to answer five simple questions about how she created Dustie Doll and where she is going with it. You may recognize Dustie Doll – they were recently featured in Nylon Mag and the clothes have been spotted on many a celeb.
(L) Derby 3 Row Stud Shorts, (R) Military Dress 1. Please tell us a little about yourself and your past career/jobs before you launched DustieDoll. I started off by going to Brooks School for Fashion/Design when I was 18 and left early because I was not impressed with the education. I then opened a vintage shop in downtown San Clemente, California. I had so much fun at the vintage shop because I had the freedom to re-create and update the clothing; it was very satisfying seeing people’s response to what was being created. However, I wanted to have my own line, I knew I needed more experience before I took this step, so I decided to finish college. After 1.5 years I received a Certificate in fashion design. I then interned with Harvey’s (Seatbelt Bags), and then almost immediately received a job from Yvette Mandel. I knew I had to work with other companies to learn the ropes, and learn what mistakes not to make. After working with Yvette for around 2 years, I decided to take a break. After 1 year, I knew I needed to save money to start my own line, I have always loved vintage, so I started Ashbury Vintage to raise the money. After a year, I had a nice chunk of money, and while I thought about going and designing for another company ( I even went to an interview, she was younger than me and super successful), I said no way! I told myself to stop being a chicken and just go for it. So I did, after launching, out first order was with Fred Segal, and it just keeps getting better. For the full about go to www.dustiedoll.com. 2. What is the concept behind DustieDoll? What are you aiming to do? Honestly, I want to look chic, but I don’t want to put the energy into it. I want to feel comfortable, but I want to look as if I fussed for hours. So I decided to design clothing you could throw on, look super ‘It Girl’, and not even try.
(L) High Waist Zipper & Bow Pant, (R) Chain Stud Dress 3. Once the concept was born, what was the process for creating DustieDoll from there? It is definitely a long process, a process that you need to learn by being in the industry for a while. The fashion industry has a whole language of it’s own. Then there are trims, dyes, fabrics, and all sorts of things that you have to make sure you have access to again when you get an order, that is definitely the biggest challenge. After that, I knew I needed to get the word out there. I knew I had to try and meet with buyers, this was so scary to me, your chances of being rejected are high, but I did it anyways, because this is my dream. 4. What has been the most exciting part of launching DustieDoll? What are your biggest successes? The most exciting part was getting our first order, having it be from Fred Segal, and having it happen on the first day we took the line out! Also the response from everyone, the magazine interviews with People and Nylon, the celebrities, and all of that. I would say that is all exciting and our biggest successes. 5. What are your plans for the future? To take over the world! No, but really – just to keep growing the company and to get into major department stores. Also, my husband and I have traveled a lot and we would like to use the financials to help our friends across the world (persecuted people in Vietnam, Thailand refugees, Russian orphans, and the sorts). When it comes to Glastonbury fashion, Kate Moss always springs to mind. Ever since Kate turned Glastonbury into her personal fashion playground, all those years ago, the festival has turned into a veritable runway of fashion and style. Now, people around the world tune in annually to see celebrities and civilians parade their festival fashion. Thanks to Kate Moss, wellington boots (aka wellies, gumboots, etc) are a must-have for Glastonbury. Here are some more “must haves” for the festival fashionista.
With their musical heritage, it’s hardly a surprise to see Pixie & Peaches Geldof at Glasto. Dressed in their usual mix of high street attire with a rocker-chic twist, the girls showed us how to be edgy while still looking cool. Pixie combined her black gumboots with a leopard print tunic and a bright headscarf. Peaches had a similar style, with a cherry red hat combined with a lace crop top. Both girls carried the all important leather jacket, perfect for the inevitable rain that is traditional at Glastonbury. GET THEIR LOOK (clockwise from top left): 1. Again, three girls with a rock & roll legacy. The Richards sisters went for practical and comfortable fashion – pairing cut-off denim shorts with gumboots and messy blonde hair. Theodora topped off her look with a canvas jacket in khaki, giving her style a chic twist of toughness. Alexandra added a little grunge to the mix with a plaid lumberjack shirt. Daisy bypassed the simple look and went straight for black fringe, with a mini skirt and a cropped mesh top both adorned with black tassels. All three girls added vintage-style satchels to the look, perfect for carrying around sunglasses and lipstick. GET THEIR LOOK (anti-clockwise from top right): 1. Denim Short w/ Rope Feather Tie, Forever 21, $17.80, 2. Elisa Plaid Shirt, Delias, $39.50, 3. Maharishi Peplum Army Jacket Twill in Summer Olive, Revolve Clothing, $211, 4. When it comes to day-to-day style, most models prefer a simpler look than the designer clothes and maximum make-up they are used to wearing. Lily and Wanessa both went for that perfectly uncomplicated look. Lily started her outfit with a pair of denim cut-offs and a slouchy black tee. By adding a fringed hobo bag and a floral umbrella, she gave her outfit a little panache while not going over the top. Wanessa went for a similar style – a simple band tee with a fedora and a bright scarf left her comfortable but colorful. GET THEIR LOOK (clockwise from top left): 1. Grail Rose Concert Tank, eModa.com, $54, 2. DIJI Tribal Print Welly, Topshop.com, $40, 3. Janis Shoulder Bag, Linea Pelle, $395, 4. RVCA Hamptons Fedora in Black, Revolve Clothing, $22, 5. Love Rain On Me Umbrella, Free People, $29.95 My fashion mood board for June: loving tie-dye, nonchalant girls, cat masks, vintage Kate, old-school graffiti roses and crooked teeth.
