2008

After taking a Christmas break, I returned to my computer on the weekend to ponder my list of the best celebrity style of 2008. The list had to be split into two, so this is the list of the best “formal” style of 2008.

This list comprises all the dresses worn to the award shows and events. I always preferred the red carpet part of the Oscars, anyway. The casual/everyday style list will come next.

Best Celebrity Style, Formal, Of 2008

1. Camilla Belle: For someone so young, Camilla Belle has certainly learnt how to freshen up a classic look. She doesn’t mess with her face or hair much, usually wearing natural make up and keeping her hair very simple. I love how, in the first picture, she takes a classic pink mini dress and pairs it with funky patent shoes and jewellery, which makes it look young and breezy. In the second picture, she effortlessly takes a simple, ethnic-print dress and adds studded, chunky heels to adapt the look and make it her own.

2. Chloe Sevigny: Apparently discovered by a fashion editor on the streets who loved her style, it’s hardly surprising that she has become such a fashion icon for so many women. What I love about Chloe is that she will do anything and everything: she will wear 50s swimsuits to the beach with high-waist bottoms and belts. She’s daring, versatile and bold. Her dress on the left carries on from 2007′s sequins trend and livens it up a little with its interesting neckline. Her look on the right is “classic Chloe” – taking on a trend in its early stages, with these wide leg pants. She adds a touch of red lipstick and she’s good to go.

Best Celebrity Style, Formal, Of 2008

3. Gwyneth Paltrow: Earlier this year, a fashion critic somewhere said that women over 35 should not show this much leg but I have to say, if I have these legs at 35 I’ll be showing them off. Gwyneth has made some bad choices in the past, wearing the wrong shoes, going without a bra, but it seems like, after two kids, Gwyneth is finally coming into her own. The little black dress is a great choice for her. She’s got this amazing blonde hair and striking face and wearing prints, in my opinion, would be almost “too much”. The LBD is just what she needs.

4. Kate Hudson: Kate Hudson is often seen as this free-spirited, hippie actress and she does often dress this way, so it’s good to see that she doesn’t feel like she has to live up to this look all the time. Obviously, in the second picture she is wearing a very bohemian-style dress and this look definitely suits her. But her dress in the first picture is still very “Kate” without being part of this hippie stereotype. She has a fantastic body and could pull everything off. I think what is best about Kate is that she is super comfortable with herself and seems just very happy with life so this mini dress and heels just look natural and easy on her.

Best Celebrity Style, Formal, Of 2008

5. Michelle Obama: Simply put, Michelle Obama is a breath of fresh air. Gone are the days of pant suits and stiff, crisp dressing. Michelle is gorgeous, knows herself, knows her body and works it. She takes risks which are a huge thing to do on the political circuit and this is, I think, what everyone is loving about her. She will be bringing something totally new to the White House which hasn’t been done in a long time! I love that she wears up-and-coming designers and I love that she wears things from the cheaper stores as well as designer fashion. This dress is simple and classy but she gives it a sharpness by adding the oversized necklace.

6. Olsen Twins: It seems like a fashion list isn’t complete without the Olsen twins and this one is no exception. This year, Mary-Kate stuck with her tried-and-true vintage dresses, chunky antique jewellery and messy hair but Ashley got a little classier, a little more risky and a little more stylish. The Olsens seem to be the “ones to watch” right now. They’re constantly evolving and trying new things and they know what they’re doing. Ashley looks really grown up in her tight, black gown but still gives it the “Olsen touch” with the cut-outs on the side.

Best Celebrity Style, Formal, Of 2008

7. Mischa Barton: I can’t always agree with Mischa’s choices; sometimes she has very poor taste. However I think Mischa is very “outside the box” and forward-thinking when it comes to fashion, even if she’s not quite “there” yet with all her choices. What I really like about Mischa is that she’s fun and she doesn’t care. She’s open to trying new things even though she knows she’s going to have cameras all over her. I love the ethnic-inspired belt around the first dress here – it makes this simple dress stand out and adds a young-at-heart twist to it. Really, it’s the same thing with the second dress. I love how she’s gone for something a little different with its embellished straps, though I think it looks slightly too big for her.

8. Nicole Richie: Nicole is another girl who seems to have come into her own, fashion-wise, after having her baby. This year she’s tried a variety of looks, which she always does, but it’s almost like having Harlow has forced her to get to know her body. Her first “event” after giving birth gave us this first dress, showing off her new curves but sticking to her bohemian style. This second dress is a little more risk-taking but it really works. Nicole always gives me the impression that she knows exactly what she’s doing and this is no exception. It could have gone really wrong, but it’s so, so right – the print, the shape, the fringing.

Best Celebrity Style, Formal, Of 2008

9. Natalie Portman: Natalie Portman seems to fly slightly under the radar when it comes to fashion. I’ve seen very few “candid” shots of her out on the street. But when it comes to events and premiers and awards, she seems to really know what she’s doing. Her face always makes me feel really refreshed, she is so beautiful, and she plays on her very understated and natural looks by wearing dresses that are slightly off-beat but still very classic. I love the way the first dress here has the tulip skirt and the cupped bust line, while the second dress has its unique Jetson-esque top and great, flowing skirt.

10. Rachel Bilson: I love Rachel Bilson’s style, always. Sometimes she’s a little too simple but she’s never boring and I think with both of these dresses she got it just right. The tie-dye was really “on trend” in 2008 and pairing it with black tights gave it an edgier look. Considering she has often stated that Kate Moss is her “style icon”, I like how she managed to get this edgier look but with her own twist on it – she doesn’t just copy, she enhances. The white dress is gorgeous anyway but considering that she has a really tiny frame (5?3? tall), I think she wears it really well. The fact that she looks long and lithe in this just shows what an eagle-eye she has for fashion.

Beach Hair Styles

December 20, 2008

{ 1 comment }

Today I spent two hours looking for beach hair styles that are easy and effortless. I am heading to the beach next week to laze around in the sun and soak up all the heat and beach air that I can get.

I’ve been putting in some serious preparation time. This has involved research into fake tan (I am way too paranoid for any other method), serious facial scrubs and more, so that I am completely beach-ready. When I looked up beach hair styles today, I came up with this perfect, windswept, wispy look, courtesy of Alessandra Ambrosio.

Beach Hair Styles

WANT THE LOOK?

First of all, I’ll be getting some highlights in my hair to bring out the blonde strands. I’ve also invested in an expensive blonde-ing shampoo which is supposed to highlight the blonde parts and make them last longer. Before heading to the beach I’ll be making sure to run a comb through my hair so that when I go swimming, it won’t knot up any more than it has to. The salt water should do the rest.

However, if you’re like me, and you want “beach hair” all year round, in all my research I’ve managed to accumulate and combine the following tips so that when you’re in the midst of winter and desperate to reinvigorate your hair with the nostalgia of beach days, you can.

  • Give your hair a deep shampoo and condition.
  • Towel-dry your hair and then “scrunch” it with your fingers.
  • Braid your hair in a thick braid so as to not create too much of a crimping effect.
  • Go to bed. When you wake, the perfect beachy waves.

If you’re not in the mood for doing all this, you can also put sea salt (not cooking salt) and water in a spray bottle, shake it up and spray it on, however as we all know, salt can have a dehydrating effect on your hair, so use with caution. After you’ve sprayed your hair, if you have time, add a leave-in conditioner to help keep your hair in its best condition.

Best Fashion Blogs Of 2008

December 18, 2008

It was only earlier this year that I first delved into the huge world of fashion blogs. I have a long list of my favourite fashion blogs but for the sake of this list, I have whittled them down to create this list of the best fashion blogs of 2008.

I used to get my fashion inspiration from magazine pictures and photos of the runway shows. It seems like these days you can make your “style mark” on the world just by being an inspirational and fastidious outfit poster.

Best Fashion Blogs Of 2008

1. Rumi of Fashion Toast: Need I say more? It’s hard to really grasp the influence this blog has had on the ‘blogosphere’. Almost any time I head over to Fashion Toast, I find an average of 90 online users. Today I happened to be there right as a blog was first posted and managed to make the first comment. I think within three hours there were 58 comments. That is unheard of! Rumi has a gorgeous face and an amazing body. But most importantly, she knows exactly who she is, fashion-wise. She is confident enough to try new trends (hello.. thermal jumpsuit?), she mixes and matches bohemian floral prints with chunky rock-chic boots with ease, she teeters on the brink of the highest heels imaginable and never falls. And she takes her blog-fame with grace.

2. Emma Nygren: It actually kind hurts me a little on the inside when I visit Emma’s blog. I start by shedding a few tears at her sheer beauty and I end with my fists clenched in a jealous rage at her awesome clothes. It doesn’t even matter that I can’t read a word of her blog. Flicking down the page is like opening up your favourite magazine while balled up on the couch in the midst of a storm. It’s pure bliss. Her style is hard to sum up. She effortlessly moves from grungier pieces to floaty dresses and sometimes throws in a Russian-style fur hat just to keep you on your toes. Sometimes she mixes all these together. Either way, you won’t leave disappointed.

Best Fashion Blogs Of 2008

3. Elenita: Elenita only just started her blog in May and it already gained a bit of a cult following. The other interesting thing to note is that she says she only just got into fashion in the last year. I’d be very pleased with myself if I could develop a sense of style that quickly! Elenita’s style is usually an ensemble of black items with a patterned or neutral tone somewhere in the mix. She wears a great set of chunky rings and black nail polish. All the black is offset by her pale features and very-blonde hair. She always smiles for her photos and is very humble with the amounts of praise she gets for her blog.

4. Lulu & Your Mom: It’s great to find a blog that shows you how you might style different things. But Lulu’s blog is a lot more – she throws in random snippets from her daily life, including quick conversations she’s had, a sly update about a boy and more. If you’re ever in need of a sneaky break at work, head to this blog and chuckle at her dry humour. Her style is slouchy. That’s what I always think of when I think about her outfits. Clothes just seem to drape themselves perfectly on her body, whether it’s DIY drop-crotch pants or t-shirts, it works when it probably shouldn’t.

Best Fashion Blogs Of 2008

5. Inside Am-Lul’s Closet: Gala’s blog features outfits from her daily life in London and small comments that she translates into English. Partly what attracts me to her blog is that she lives in London and I love seeing all the places that I used to go and seeing London life. She is one of the most stylish bloggers out there. Gala wears a lot of ultra chic pieces and has the body of a model to help pull it all off. Think classy knits paired with the latest shredded jeans or a black blazer.

6. Carolina of Fashion Squad: Carolina’s blog Fashion Squad is filled with her favourite fashion items, celebrity style and other things she is lusting over at the moment. She flicks from her new rings to pictures of the Olsen twins, all the while commenting on her own outfits and what she wants to buy next. Her style is quite simple. She wears anything from floppy white tees with wide-leg jeans to leather jackets with black minis and heels. She seems to know exactly what she wants, style-wise and often pairs it with a dash of bright lipstick which she totally owns!

Best Fashion Blogs Of 2008

7. Lisa Place: This is a blog I just stumbled upon one day while blog-hopping and ever since, it’s been in my bookmarks. I love the way she throws in pictures of her everyday life that don’t necessarily involve her outfits; pictures of lights, the sky, her garden, etc. Her style can be quite “sporty” at times – converse sneakers with tights and an oversized t-shirt or a leather jacket and a vintage bag. She is quite varied when choosing her outfits, which is unusual, it seems, among blogs. It would be hard to try and define any one outfit against another.

8. Camille of Childhood Flames: I had heard about this blog by word of mouth several times when I first started reading it; everybody wanted to know how such a young girl could wear such amazing outfits. I too find it fairly amazing given that my standard outfit between the ages of 13-15 was a green jean jacket paired with anything. Her style is chic and understated. She goes for perfectly-cut blazers, simple high-waisted skirts, mini dresses and sandals. She borrows her dads shirts and pairs them with minis; she goes shopping with her mum and comes home with Dries Van Noten sandals. I’d be pretty happy to have had this style-knowledge when I was her age.

Best Fashion Blogs Of 2008

9. Isabelle of Bohemian Musings: It would be hard to go to this blog and not get sucked in by the beautiful header alone. Isabella makes you stay longer by filling her blog with pictures of just plain delicious things; coffee, gilets, models. Her entire blog as this really soft, aesthetic quality to it. Her style is similar in that she dresses quite romantically, if you know what I mean. Everything is really soft and comfortable-looking with beautiful floral prints and the sun beaming down on just the right angle.

10. Susie of Style Bubble: It would be pointless to imagine this list without Susie of Style Bubble. She is prolific (no fashion stone unturned) and thorough – I find it hard to imagine how she can just sit and write as she does and keep down her day job. More importantly, she is knowledgeable and consistently so. I find myself learning something every time I visit. Susie’s style? Unique, forward-thinking, postmodern. A variety of things, but never boring. What I find important about her style is that she manages to wear crazy outfits on a daily basis, withstand the countless criticisms that come from jealous readers and then she moves on. She writes one of the most visited fashion blogs on the planet and yet she stands strong against everyone and just does what she does best and what she’s always done.

Paris Chic

December 17, 2008

{ 0 comments }

I have always been a fan of Paris Chic. After flicking through a notebook the other day and finding a picture of Jane Birkin, I decided to spend a little more time researching the finer points of Paris Chic.

I think we all can agree that the number one style rule in Paris and the rest of France is to be simple. It’s not about piling on loads of layers and jewellery to create one heavy look. It’s more about picking a few key pieces and ending up with a stylish outfit. The French understand that it’s easy to be comfortable and stylish at once and that one doesn’t forsake the other.

Important rules:

  • Wear simple clothes in neutral colours that can be worn with as many of your other pieces as possible.
  • Always buy a key piece “of the season” to give your closet a quick, stylish update.
  • Again, simplicity is key and when it comes to your hairstyle, think no differently.
  • Invest in a gorgeous perfume that leaves people watching you as you go.
  • Go for natural make-up.

It seems that the French look can be summed up in one word: effortless. Think “I don’t care how I look when I walk out the door” but do care. Just not too much.

Paris Chic

Three very stylish French women (and unfairly, all from the same family) are Jane Birkin and her daughters Lou Doillon and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Closet must-haves for these three? Luxuriously soft knit sweaters, denim cut-off shorts, tousled “bed” hair, an expensive trench coat, black mini dresses and always black stockings.

My fashion inspiration at the moment is overwhelming – I am inspired by a lot of things but there is not much time to do anything about it. Apart from Christmas, I am moving to America in six weeks so I have a lot to do.

I took a quick break today to rummage around various websites and put together this quick collage of pictures; things that are inspiring me at the moment. Plus, I am a sucker for distraction.

Fashion Inspiration, December 2008

1. I am a big fan of the grunge revival that is taking place right now and Elenita has got it down. Plaid shirts, heavy boots. This is going to be my mid-March inspiration, once I’ve been back in America for a little while and I’m able to venture out into the cold without almost dying.

2. I’ve got two weeks to put something like this together before New Years Eve. I can probably track down the shorts; I’ve just got to find the perfect studded vest and a variation on the corset/chain that Erin is wearing.

3. Probably my look for April-going-on-May – once it is warm enough to wear floppy tanks again, but it’s still not too hot to don a gorgeous pair of moccasins and traipse the New York streets.

To me, the Richards sisters are slightly insane. They are mini-versions of their parents (Keith Richards and Patti Hansen, as if I have to tell you). Look at the jawline on Theo!

What do I know about them? Alexandra and Theo are probably pretty aware of their amazing lineage and their amazing good looks, but they don’t seem to flaunt it. They wear very edgy, rock & roll pieces (understandable – think of the closets they have been able to raid) with pared-down makeup and hairstyles. They both model, obviously.

Richards Sisters

Closet must-haves? Get a few buttery-soft leather jackets, some tight body-con mini dresses (and I mean mini), some fur coats, ethnic belts, a fedora or two, vintage lace dresses, sequinned berets and some black Mary Janes. For your under-the-radar days, grab some dark heart-shaped glasses. When heading to a festival, go for studded cut-off shorts and chunky boots.

Go for basic pieces when you put together your outfit. Jeans (and lots of them) are a good start, given that Theodora is now VP of Creative Direction for 4Stroke! For a quick outfit fix, get yourself a brown leather jacket; chuck it over a pair of leggings with black flats and a slouchy t-shirt. You don’t need to worry too much about accessories. Rarely do we see them with stacks of bracelets or rings. Just a simple bangle and maybe a thin-stranded necklace. Add a straw fedora and you’re good to go.

Angéline Mélin

A few days ago I received an email from Angéline Mélin, telling me about herself. She is a French illustrator who also works in fashion. She sent me the link to her blog, Angéline Mélin Illustrations.

I went and checked out her blog and discovered she is an absolutely fantastic artist! I totally love her drawings. It looks like she uses just pen and paper, nothing fancy, but they are totally creative, really true to life and just great to look at.

I have always wanted to be a fashion designer but I can’t draw. I love when I find a truly talented illustrator as the drawings always inspire me to work harder and do better!

Today, I received another email from her with a new drawing she has done just for this website. I love it – it really made me smile. You should definitely go and check out her stuff when you have a chance.

Sienna Miller Hair

December 13, 2008

When it comes to hair, I am pretty low maintenance. I have long admired the hair that Sienna Miller sported in Alfie, but I am pretty sure that it would require daily upkeep.

I wash my hair twice a week, at most. I don’t always brush it and I rarely put it up, as it is so thick that it just falls down again. All of this means that I am constantly on the lookout for a great hair style for a blonde with thick hair. Enter Sienna Miller.

Sienna Miller Hair

It soon will be time for me to get another haircut and I’m thinking about what I should do. Given that as of February, I will be living in America in the depths of winter; I was thinking that I should get something that looks, well, wintery. Thicker bangs, maybe, something that would look good with leather jackets and fur coats.

Unfortunately, I think Sienna got extensions for her role in Alfie, but my hair is pretty thick, so I hopefully wouldn’t need to do that. My bangs are actually cut into this shape anyway, I just sweep them to the side. I hope this will be a good look for the winter months.

Airport Fashion

December 12, 2008

Airport fashion is obviously important to celebrities. They style themselves for the trail of paparazzi that are inevitably waiting for them at the boarding gate, but they have to keep themselves looking comfortable as well.

Here are some celebrities pictured at the airport and some quick tips on how to stay stylish and comfortable for your flight.

Airport Fashion

  • To look fresh as a daisy when you get off your flight, make sure you carry a pair of dark glasses in your carry-on luggage.
  • Planes are usually a few degrees colder than you might like. Bring a blazer and a patterned scarf to throw over your shoulders, a la Kate Moss & Vanessa Hudgens.
  • The best airport fashionistas wear jeans or leggings to keep their legs warm.
  • Invest in an oversized leather bag so you can carry a stack of magazines if you can’t sleep.
  • A comfortable pair of shoes that can easily be slipped on or off at security are a must.
  • Long flights are notorious for dehydrating you. Drink plenty of water and avoid drinking alcohol, coffee or soda.
  • Dehydration affects your skin as well. Take some lip balm to smooth your lips and apply moisturiser throughout the flight.
  • To look totally fresh when you step off the flight, get an eye mask and a pair of “sound eliminating” earphones and sleep the night away.

Top Fashion Trends Of 2008

December 11, 2008

{ 9 comments }

Here are my top fashion trends of 2008, another in my series of lists. This was one of the easier lists to compile, as most of these photos were already serving as inspiration to me. It is interesting to see how quickly these trends were picked up, which trends will continue into 2009, which trends have morphed from 2007.

Top Fashion Trends Of 2008

1. Gladiator Sandals: The ultimate fashion-warrior shoe! Having first been “seen” in 2007, these were still the shoe to be wearing through 2008. The shoe factories started pumping out the designs – we saw them in knee-high, we saw them ankle-high, we saw them in metallic colours. It’s not hard to understand. They offer toughness to an outfit, even if just wearing a simple cotton dress.

2. Headbands: Another trend that we first saw back in 2007, perhaps even as far back as 2006, it started out as a simple scarf tied around the hair on stars like Nicole Richie. But these morphed into a more sophisticated look in 2008, reminiscent of the flapper era. Velvet turbans, sequinned headbands – the headband became the must-have accessory of the year.

Top Fashion Trends Of 2008

3. Feathers: Feather detail started appearing on the runways early on in the year. While my personal fashion memories of feathers include feather boas draped around my shoulders when I was young, on the runways it presented itself in a more ethereal fashion: high-waisted skirts with fishnets, tucked behind ears, on collars, underneath dark blazers.

4. Fringe Detail: Fringe detailing was everywhere – from Mary Kate Olsen’s fringe bag by Prada, to flapper-style dresses, to moccasins. A lot of the fringe detail was reminiscent of the hippie era and added a great sixties touch to any outfit.

Top Fashion Trends Of 2008

5. Stud Detail: Suddenly studding, and DIY studding, has become all the rage, and an expensive rage at that. A pair of hand-studded boots at Free People sets you back more than $300 and Rumi of Fashion Toast is making circa $100 on every pair of studded Levis she sells! It started when Bess released their studded moccasins and it doesn’t look to be ending any time soon.

6. Torn Denim: It became clear after Balmain sent models down the catwalk in perfectly-torn denim that we wouldn’t be looking back. Suddenly everyone is shredding their jeans to near-oblivion and, if you have the talent to get a near-perfect slash, why not?

Top Fashion Trends Of 2008

7. Grunge Revival: If it smells like teen spirit, it probably is. Bring out your Doc Martens and your lumberjack shirts. Grunge is back. It feels like it was just yesterday that grunge was here for the first time. It was a sign of the revival when Daisy Lowe became the first “face” of Doc Martens. Now, lumberjacks everywhere are making a killing on eBay with their old shirts.

8. High-Waisted: Not always the most flattering of looks, this trend is another that carried over from 2007. High-waisted shorts kicked off the trend and in 2008, it morphed into high-waisted skirts – everything from ethnic to floral to geometric prints to simple black, as long as it was high-waisted. Usually worn with a simple tank, this trend was great for girls with slim waists but wide hips.

Top Fashion Trends Of 2008

9. Leather Leggings: Out of nowhere came leather-look leggings. Sass & Bide’s “Black Rats” leggings were sold out weeks in advance, Kate Moss has done a pair of Topshop and American Apparel is ruling the market. Flattering or not, everyone wants them.

10. Wayfarer Sunglasses: I’ve mentioned it once already here but brightly coloured wayfarers were a huge trend this year. Starting out with Heath Ledger sporting red wayfarers in January, we seemed to roll through all the colours, with Rachel Bilson in green, Ashley Olsen in orange and Chloe Sevigny in white. I think that line up of names alone proves what a hit they were.
