Model Style

The key to “Model Style” is looking like you didn’t even try to look as fabulous as you do. It makes it a little easier when you have access to a lot of the world’s best fashion, before it even hits the stores.

Another advantage? Having an amazing, lithe body with slim hips and sharp cheekbones. Not to mention travelling the world, getting free Chanel handbags, etc. The list goes on.

Model Style

IRINA LAZAREANU: I’ve been a big admirer of Irina Lazareanu for a while now. She is really unique and while she usually sticks to the current trends, it is never in the way you might think. During the crazy suede/fringe moccasin trend, she wore cute moccasin booties with a floral maxi dress and a tuxedo coat. She pairs muddy riding boots with glittery mini dresses, slouchy drop-crotch jumpsuits with cropped jackets and tartan jackets with pirate boots. I always wondered what her engagement rings must have looked like (from her two engagements to Pete Doherty) – I am sure they were not your regular diamonds.  Her style is mismatched and “kooky bohemian” – I imagine at a party she’d be the crazy, whirly dancer with a drink in one hand and her hair flying everywhere.

ERIN WASSON: Then there’s Erin Wasson, on the other hand. Her fame as a “style icon” has rocketed this year with her highly-anticipated collaboration with RVCA, her LowLuv jewelry collection and her side job styling Alexander Wang’s shows. Because of her model’s body, she can mix studded biker boots with cute, flimsy dresses. She obviously values her “skater” side and seems to try to stick to that when it comes to styling, pairing tougher, masculine looks like heavy boots and leather jackets with a girly dress or a breezy, loose hairstyle.

LILY DONALDSON: Lily Donaldson seems to be of the Erin Wasson school of thought when it comes to style. I’ve rarely seen her step outside the denim & leather / black & white combinations. Whether that means pairing denim cutoffs with a slouchy tee and black vest, to this ensemble of black leather jacket with same tee, she has her look down pat but doesn’t venture outside her “look” much.

CHANEL IMAN: Chanel Iman is probably the closest to my heart when it comes to “model style”. I like her bohemian sensibilities and simple side. While all models seem to go for the most comfortable but stylish look that they can find, when off duty, Chanel always appears like she has just thrown on an outfit from her closet and while it is thought out and well put together, it doesn’t ever seem like she’s trying.

During my week at the beach I spent hours flipping through a huge stack of fashion magazines that I had saved up. As always, I was inspired by things on every page and started writing notes and ideas down on paper. Here is some of my fashion inspiration for January.

Fashion Inspiration, January 2009

America: On Tuesday, it will be two weeks until I move to America. While I’m sad and slightly traumatized at the thought, I am excited too. After all, Topshop is opening in NYC any day and I’ve been going slightly mad without Topshop ever since I left London. And America is the “land of the free”, right? So, I’ll go with the hopes and wishes of other immigrants and endeavor to live a great life there.

Floral Prints: I’ve always been a big fan of floral prints but every summer I feel like I want just one more floral dress or floral skirt. This year I’m after a tiny tea dress with bright green floral patterns, a la Kate Moss. Also, a grungier, black and white version and some sort of floral draped tank top. Worn with rough and tough separates or accessories, like chunky boots and fierce jewelry.

Kings Of Leon: There’s always been something about 70s rock bands that I’ve loved and Kings Of Leon almost, almost bring that look into the new century. Cowboy boots, long hair. Apart from always bobbing along to their music, I just love their style – part rock star, part country, part On The Road. They make me want to dress boys up for fun, or something.

Carine Roitfeld: I’m fairly sure she inspires me every month but the more I Google her, the more I love her. She is the epitome of French chic and someone I constantly want to blog about. Skimpy black dresses, straight hair, lean legs and a fierce look on her face. I love the fact she considers herself a “bit punk at times” because that’s just what she is, not to mention a far cry from the more structured, classical Anna Wintour.

House Of Harlow: I’m a huge fan of ethnic styling and House Of Harlow’s jewelry makes me happy. Beautiful African colors, deep reds, burnt oranges. Love the chunkiness of some of it too. The dinner plate-sized ring, for example, with the leather detail and gold starburst cut. I think Nicole Richie has a good eye for fashion. Hopefully the quality is good too.

Marianne Faithfull: Photos of her in full black lace body-suits, fur clad, holding a cigarette over her face, with her choppy hair and bands and full lips. How could you not be inspired by her? As a muse to the Rolling Stones, she travelled the world in paisley dresses, leather gloves, knee high boots and inspired some of their greatest songs (Wild Horses being one of my favorites).

Fashion Inspiration, January 2009

Gemma Ward: Her fresh-faced beauty reminds me of all the good things about Australia – natural beauty, summery locks and a laid-back appeal. Her wide-eyed face reminds me of a little owl, like Lily Cole, and I love that she has that “different” look about her. Her photo shoots, for some reason, always make me happy, like watching someone having simple fun.

Doc Marten Revival: It’s been many years since I made a covert schoolyard purchase from a friend; her cherry-red Docs for my $50. Those Docs have long passed on and now I feel like it’s almost time for a new pair. I don’t know if I’m ready to regress into my teenage years just yet (especially not the fashion) but when I see Daisy Lowe frolicking in a pair, it’s hard not to want to wear frocks and Docs.

Little Doe: I had already seen Erin Wasson rock a feather headband from Little Doe long before I ever knew who Little Doe was. Now I’m starting to seriously consider saving the money to custom order a feather headband of my own from Little Doe owner, Chase Cohl. I’ve just got to work out if I have the long, wispy 70s hair required to wear this look. If you do, don’t hesitate!

Influence: My boyfriend bought me this book for Christmas and I’ve been slowly going through it, turning the pages so carefully. These girls have influenced me so it’s awesome to a see a book on what influences them. The interviews are fairly well-crafted, though I’m only halfway through so far. I can’t wait to get an apartment to live in soon so that we can have a coffee table specifically for this book.

Etro: Etro are my new favorite designers. Every year as I browse the hundreds of collections from various Fashion Weeks, I get a little giddy about certain designers – Marni, D&G, Miu Miu, Anna Sui – the list goes on. Now it’s Etro. I can’t get over their gorgeous floaty designs, bright colors, hippie embellishments and detailing. I want to dress head to toe in Etro.

Jen Brill: I’ve loved Terry Richardson’s photography for a long time but never paid much attention to his life. Enter Jen Brill, his girlfriend. Her half-Asian looks lend her an exotic edge, but she also holds her own in the fashion world with her doe eyed stare, bright red lipstick, childlike features on a curvy body. Something about her always makes me just stare at her.

This is the second part of my list of the best celebrity style of 2008. The list had to be split into two, so this is the list of the best “candid” style of 2008.

There is only one person who has made it onto both lists, Chloe Sevigny, which only proves how fashionable the girl is.

Best Celebrity Style, Candid, Of 2008

1. Alexa Chung: While I was living in London, Alexa Chung was among the pages of every newspaper or magazine I bought but I didn’t really pay much attention to her. In fact, for a long time I thought she was a bit drab. However, during 2008, I began to notice her a little bit and I began to really like her sense of style. Whether it is throwing in a doctor bag or pairing an ethnic-patterned sweater dress with simple flats, she always manages to convince me she knows exactly what she’s doing while keeping it really simple and chic.

2. Alice Dellal: While flicking through pictures of Alice last night, my boyfriend couldn’t believe his ears when I said she was a model. Admittedly, Alice Dellal is not your average girl. She has shaved one side of her head and has a Jerry Hall-style flick on the other side. She wears a nose ring, giant leather studded vests, sometimes goes without a skirt or trousers. What more do I need to say?! She’s unique and that is a rare thing these days. While not classically beautiful, she is certainly striking.. I always am quite compelled by her photos, whether it is her latest outfit or just her face and her confidence. I love the fact that even when she dresses up she wears a slightly-scuffed leather skirt.

3. Chloe Sevigny: The girl can do no wrong. When she’s trawling the streets in super-high denim shorts, it makes me think I can get away with super-high denim shorts. When she wears a strapless black romper and wedges, I think I can wear them. What’s not to love about Chloe? She inspires women the world over to wear whatever they want. Unfortunately, we don’t all have Chloe’s body or looks to help us along. Chloe makes the list because she’ll probably always make the list.. I can’t imagine a year going by without an amazing outfit from Chloe.

4. Helena Christensen: Before Sienna or even Kate, Helena Christensen was showing us how to work the bohemian look. Without ever looking overdone or like she is trying too hard, she goes from a night-time look of sequin skirt and blazer with a studded clutch to a daytime look of sweater, ethnic scarf and cropped pants. Her messy, rock-chic hair is always perfectly undone for her offbeat and quirky look. Key essentials: blazers, pendant necklaces, small clutches and simple, coloured flats.

5. Julia Restoin-Roitfeld: Let’s just say that if I could trade places for a day, it’d probably be with Julia Restoin-Roitfeld. I don’t think I need to say why. Although she has access to one of the world’s most-envied wardrobes, she is often found in vintage and up and coming designers. She can go from a breezy blouse and shorts to a gorgeous white lace dress with leather jacket for a night out. It would be very hard to grow up knowing that the world expects you to be fashionable because of her lineage. I don’t think she has disappointed.

6. Kate Bosworth: Kate Bosworth has flown under the radar for me for quite a while. I’ve noticed her but not really noticed her. In 2008 I started to find myself saving more and more pictures of her. I think I most appreciate the fact that she quietly tries new trends and sees what works for her, until suddenly you realise she’s been wearing those red Chloe boots for the last three months and you’ve only just caught on, like, where did they come from!? Ever the Californian girl, she can work an all-black look without looking back, showing how versatile she can be.

7. Lou Doillon: Gorgeous Lou. I remember seeing Lou Doillon for the first time in Elle about four years ago and falling in love a little. She never fails to impress me. I love how she will wear a roughed-up country look, like her scuffy boots and earthy jeans but then shift to a classic pair of wide leg pants and tank. Her messy hair and her long legs only aid her look. She even gets away with wearing fluoro yellow without a single fashion critic breathing down her neck. Want the Lou look? Invest in leather jackets, various pre-scuffed boots, tight dresses and a pack of Marlboros.

8. Michelle Williams: Michelle first caught my eye a few years back when she wore that yellow dress to the Oscars. Ever since then I’ve kept my eye on her, mostly because she gives me great ideas as to how one can wear an outfit if you have two seconds to put something together and you are really bored of thinking about fashion. Follow Michelle: if you are just wearing jeans and a button-up shirt, add a pair of suspenders for a quick fashion fix! Want the grunge look without any effort? Just throw a plaid shirt over your t-shirt and you are halfway there. It strikes me that Michelle is trying to be as unnoticed as possible, but we just can’t help going back!

9. Vanessa & Victoria Traina: These socialite sisters have the money to spend on fashion and it seems they use it wisely. Not content with just wearing clothes, they both try different looks and are nearly always ahead of the game. Victoria (right) is the more outlandish of the two, as seen by her unique twist on the current harem trouser trend, wearing them in leather! I find Victoria’s look generally more appealing though I’d be more likely to wear what Vanessa wears. Vanessa (left) has a more bohemian look, generally, though here she is trying a rock & roll look out and it works for her, with her natural beauty and no make-up look.

10. Zoe Kravitz: I’ve already blogged about Zoe once but I keep going back for more. Though I think she sometimes gets it really wrong, by wearing ratty clothes that are just not clean, I think for the most part she gets it really right. She has this haute hippie style that I really love… Satin headbands, long wooden beads, chunky rings and fur coats. She changes her hairstyle regularly, going from long flowing hair to short, punky hair. If you want Zoe’s look, find yourself a fur coat and some cute mini dresses and you’ll be on your way.
