Accessory Report: 70s-Inspired Satchels

It is no secret that the 1970s are back in a big way this season. In fact, we have seen the influence of the boho-meets-disco decade in everything from maxi dresses to platform sandals, so it is no surprise to see that the latest accessory trend to make waves in the world of fashion—leather satchels—is directly inspired by the 1970s. Yes, dear readers, lately we have noticed a slew of top tastemakers, including Keira Knightley and Alexa Chung, sporting 70s-inspired satchels while out and about. On that note, if you are ready to inject your closet with a dose of modern-boho, read on as today’s Accessory Report has all the major details!

Keira Knightley
If there is one thing we love about this trend it is that there are so many ways to work it! For instance, why not incorporate a satchel into a casually-chic ensemble the way Keira Knightley has? Back in May, Keira was spotted out and about in Venice wearing a pleated skirt and knotted blouse, which she paired with a messenger-style satchel. Although Keira’s ensemble already has an easy, breezy vibe, her unfussy carryall bag definitely emphasizes her carefree look. For a similarly stylish ensemble, pick up Ralph Lauren Collection’s Multi-Pocket Textured-Leather Satchel ($595) or Pilcro’s Patent-Edged Satchel ($228) and pair it with a floaty maxi skirt like ASOS’s Premium Pleated Midi Skirt ($68.96).

Alexa Chung
Now, if a party is looming on your calendar, make sure you take your satchel style cues from Alexa Chung. In May, Alexa was spotted at a book launch party in New York City wearing a spotted dress and carrying a brick-red satchel. We love the way that Alexa is carrying her satchel as a clutch. Not only is this an appropriate party look, but it also helps to balance Alexa’s retro dress and give the ensemble a modern vibe. To try this look, pick up Marc By Marc Jacobs’ Ozzie Square Smith Satchel ($358) or J Crew’s Edie Purse ($238) and pair it with a vintage-inspired dress like Forever 21’s Polka Dot Dress ($24.80).

Zoe Kravitz
Zoe Kravitz has admitted to taking inspiration from her parents, Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, so we weren’t surprised to see her wearing an eclectic mash-up while out and about in New York City last month. Although her ensemble—a floral slip dress and chunky boots—references the grunge era more than any other, her cross-body satchel gives her outfit a 1970s spin. The result? A look that stays true to Zoe’s cool, rock and roll vibe. To create an equally cool look, grab Rebecca Minkoff’s Flowerstud Cross-Body ($595) or Mango’s Angyt Handbag ($18.99) and pair it with Elizabeth & James’ Floral Silk Sweetheart Neck Halter Dress ($276) and 7 For All Mankind’s Emma Flat Booties ($295).

Claudia Schiffer
Last, but certainly not least, we turn to Claudia Schiffer, who was spotted out and about in London earlier this month. By pairing her Salvatore Ferragamo satchel with other 70s-inspired pieces—specifically, a yellow button-down and wide-leg jeans—Claudia has channeled the boho decade in a fresh and modern way. Plus, by choosing an oversized satchel, Claudia has ensured she has everything a mom-on-the-go needs! To compose a similarly stylish look, pick up Melie Bianco’s Kimberly Satchel ($51.99) or Topshop’s Nomad Tooled Leather Satchel ($70). Then, simply add Alice + Olivia’s Piper Crinkled Blouse ($176) and a pair of Textile Elizabeth & James’ Bette High-Rise Flared Jeans ($225) for good measure!
