As fashion fans, you know that almost every trend is a new and improved version of its past self—in other words, what’s new is old, and what’s old is new. With that said, we are thrilled to see that the latest accessory trend to come back into fashion is the choker necklace—something that has not been seen with regularity since the early 1990s. Now, however, thanks to top tastemakers like Rihanna and Olivia Wilde, the choker necklace is hitting the mainstream, so click through to today’s Accessory Report for all the need-to-know details on how you can make this must-try look your own. Read on!
Who is trying this trend?
Although this look has been floating around for a while, Rihanna really brought it into the spotlight when she wore a gold choker to a Stella McCartney presentation in London back in February. Just a few days later, Olivia Wilde helped the cause by wearing a gold choker to the Vanity Fair 2012 Oscar Party in West Hollywood back in February. More recently, both Chloe Moretz and Emmy Rossum wore chokers to a performance at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
How are they styling it?
As you can see, all four of our muses styled their choker necklaces in a similar way, pairing them with long evening gowns. While Chloe, Olivia, and Emmy opted for strapless gowns, Rihanna paired hers with a gown that had thin spaghetti straps. Because a choker necklace is quite a strong accessory, it is best to stick to this simple formula—you don’t need to pair your necklace with a busy neckline. You will also notice that Rihanna is the only one of our four muses that has left her hair done—Chloe, Olivia, and Emmy all pulled their locks back to allow the spotlight to shine on their neckline. When it comes to your hair, we suggest you do what feels most appropriate depending on the occasion and the type of dress you are wearing.
How can I make this look my own?
Now for the fun part: picking out your own choker necklace! If you want to follow in the footsteps of both Chloe and Emmy, who both wore fitted black Yves Saint Laurent choker necklaces, we suggest you check out Maria Francesca Pepe’s Pin Choker Necklace ($123). It has an edgy safety-pin that can easily be removed, if necessary. If you prefer Rihanna’s chunky collar-style necklace, we like Kenneth Jay Lane’s Satin Gold Hinged Collar ($215), Guess’s Metal Collar Necklace ($30), and Nasty Gal’s Stacked Collar Necklace ($28). All three would look just as amazing with a white tank top as an evening gown. Last, but certainly not least, if you want a delicate necklace like Olivia’s, we suggest you check out Alexis Bittar’s Liquid Gold Thin Collar Necklace ($195) and St. John Collection’s Hammered Narrow Collar Necklace ($65). Happy shopping!
