Accessory Report: Dark Side

Maybe it is the dark days of winter but lately we have noticed a number of stylish stars have turned to the dark side—the dark side of accessories, that is! Specifically, celebrities such as Rihanna, Emma Roberts and Alexa Chung, to name a few, have been spotted in jewelry that is part sinister, party sexy—think: pistol charms, talon necklaces, skull-shaped rings and more. We have totally fallen under the spell of these must-have accessories too: they add an edgy twist to every outfit and who can say no to that? On that note, we present our latest Accessory Report!

Although celebrities like Mary-Kate Olsen were working this look as far back as 2009, it is only in the last year that this trend has really taken hold. You can partly thank New York-based jewelry designer Pamela Love (bottom right) for that. Her creations are simultaneously inspired by art, magic, science, religion, life and death, and she counts Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Alexa Chung as fans. Also of note: jewelry designer and Fendi heiress Delfina Delettrez, whose creations commonly feature skulls, spiders and snakes.

So, how can you try this look for yourself? We suggest looking to the modish muses above for suggestions. Take, for example, Alexa Chung, who was spotted at an event in New York City wearing Pamela Love’s Small Crow Skull Necklace ($625). By coupling her mysterious necklace with a set of sophisticated pieces—dressy shorts, a button-down shirt, and a cape coat—she has created a modern look with a rebellious twist. If you prefer a rock & roll vibe, take your cues from Rihanna, who paired Ron Herman’s Campise Gun Necklace ($648) with rocker basics—think: leather skinny pants, a shearling biker jacket, and dark sunglasses—while out and about in Los Angeles recently. Of course, you can also employ the styling tactics of Emma Roberts, Mary-Kate Olsen and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld by incorporating your dark accessories into your everyday wardrobe. For example, Emma is often spotted in Hollywood wearing a small pair of skull-shaped stud earrings, and Julia frequently shows off a talon pendant.

On that note, it is time to start shopping! For a sinister necklace fix, check out Alexander McQueen’s Bird Skull Necklace ($425) and Pamela Love’s Eagle Claw Necklace ($220). If you’re on the hunt for a menacing pair of earrings, we love ASOS’s Claw Spike Earrings ($13.79) and Day Of The Dead’s Skull Post Earrings ($14). Finally, if it’s a ring you’re craving, try Rachel Roy’s Bird Skull Ring ($38) or Blu Bijoux’s Gold Talon Double Ring ($50).
