Knee high socks – the latest trend to hit the accessory world – are a natural extension of one of fall’s biggest trends, the thigh-high boot. No longer shoulder they shrink away under your boots; it’s time for your pair of knee high socks to be the focus of your outfit!
Although the look has been around for years, for a long time knee high socks were relegated to the closets of pop stars and school girls; they were not a look you would expect to see on the catwalks of New York and London. However, thanks to a few perceptive designers, the knee high sock has made a fashion 360°, so you should expect to see a lot more of them.
Who can we thank for this trend? British model Agyness Deyn (far left) was an early-adopter of the look and in recent seasons, both Alexander Wang and the design duo behind Rag & Bone have used the look. If you’re ready to incorporate this look into your closet, read on for some fashionable inspiration.
British model Agyness Deyn (far left) has never shied away from quirky fashion, so it isn’t surprising that she was working this look long before it was a trend. She mixes a pair of printed socks with bright silver Oxfords and a punkified jacket for an eclectic mix that definitely works. Free People’s Mosaic Cotton Over The Knee Socks ($9.95) and American Apparel’s Tie Dye Super Sheer Over-The-Knee Socks ($13) are both great options.
For his spring collection, Alexander Wang went for sporty-chic styling, pairing knee high socks with strong-shouldered sweaters and leather shorts, to start. These Cable Over Knee Socks ($5.13) from Asos are a stylish stand-in for the real thing. Pair them with leopard wedges, a cropped sweater and a striped skirt for an athletic-inspired ensemble.
Moving over to British TV presenter Jameela Jamil (middle), who wore a pair of simple black knee high socks. Jameela paired hers with a chunky, houndstooth-print cardigan and layered them under thigh high boots. For a similar look, why not try a pair of these Pointelle Knee High Socks ($8, or 3 for $18) from Urban Outfitters. The ruffle cuff at the top gives a hint of school-girl chic when peeking out from under your boots.
If you love the thought of wearing knee high socks through the colder seasons, you’ll need a chunkier, knit version, as seen on the models at Rag & Bone (second from right). For a warm and cozy look, why not layer a pair of black knee high socks over these Hue Cotton Cable Knee Socks ($7) from Lori’s Shoes.
For our final source of inspiration, we found one of the biggest trendsetters of this generation in a pair of knee high socks: Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw (far left). We love the added length of Carrie’s socks so we chose a similarly chic version: these Superlong Over The Knee Socks ($20) from Topshop are perfect!
