Accessory Trends: Trapper Hats

The winter weather brings with it the need to embrace all manners of warm and furry accessories, but of all the emerging accessory trends this season the trapper hat is starting to stand out as a key piece. The winter weather brings with it the need to embrace all manners of warm and furry accessories, but of all the emerging accessory trends this season the trapper hat is starting to stand out as a key piece. For the last few years, the trapper hat has been spotted on many a celeb, including Madonna, Alexandra Richards and both Lily Donaldson and Lily Allen (all pictured). When Michael Kors unveiled a collection of neon fur trapper hats in his Fall 2009 Ready To Wear collection, we were pretty much sold on the trend.

Upon first glance a fur trapper hat might bring to mind the type of gun-toting Russian minx that James Bond would have an affair with, or even a drab Marge Gunderson from the movie Fargo. On further inspection, however, you’ll find that when done right, the trapper hat has the potential to make your winter wardrobe stand out from the crowd. It’s also a particularly relevant choice right now, given that faux fur is a huge fall/winter trend.

Accessory Trends: Trapper Hats

As seen at the Michael Kors Fall 2009 RTW show (pictured top, left), the trapper hats on the runway were all about 80s neon. The bold pops of color are definitely the way to go if you don’t mind standing out in a crowd. Kate Spade’s Bisous Trapper Hat ($195) has a similar, hot pink shade and is made of a luxurious faux fur, while Topshop’s Double Pom Pom Trapper Hat ($32) in fluorescent coral will give you a less showy, knit version of the look.

When Alexandra Richards decided to sport a trapper hat, she opted for a knit version in a wintery print, complete with fur trim, dressing it up with a chunky patterned scarf and a leather coat. We love the Fair Isle Knit Bomber Hat ($39.50) for a budget-friendly version of Alexandra’s look.

Although we love the printed versions that are available right now, when it comes to styling your outfit around your trapper hat, a solid, neutral shade will definitely leave you with more options. Exhibit A? Both model Lily Donaldson and singer Lily Allen have gone for this look, although both girls have tried it in very different ways. Donaldson, who prefers a rock-chic edge when she is off duty, has paired her black fur trapper hat with a leather jacket and a slouchy white tee. Meanwhile Allen, who has become friendly with Karl Lagerfeld in recent months, rocked a more classic look, pairing her white fur hat with a Chanel jacket and a tried-and-true shade of red lipstick. We like both looks equally and luckily, Topshop’s Faux Fur Trapper Hat ($44) comes in both a black and a white version, so you can try your preferred look with ease.

Finally, we move to Madonna who has gone for a more rugged version of the look, pairing her hat with an oversized puffer jacket and a printed tee. For a similar style, we think this UGG Australia Trapper Hat ($95) is perfect. Even better, this hat is made for men so buy it for your boyfriend and then steal it from him. It’s the perfect gift and this way, everyone wins!

They look so warm and comfortable. But I would have no idea how to wear it.
