Backstage Beauty: Essie Nails it at New York Fashion Week

September 10, 2013 by

New York Fashion Week is in full swing, and Essie seems to be dominating the backstage beauty scene this year. Thus far, they’ve manicured models for shows such as Alexander Wang, Jill Stuart, Helmut Lang and many more (18 in total).

Here are two of our favorite Essie catwalk creations—for Rebecca Minkoff and Costello Tagliapietra—and how you can recreate them at home.

For Rebecca Minkoff, Essie manicurist Michelle Saunders utilized a bright base color, then accentuated her accent nails with an array of exotic scull designs. This artistic touch complimented Minkoff’s collection perfectly, which was inspired by vibrant Mexican textures à la Frida Kahlo.

Begin by applying two coats of Tart Deco. Choose your accent nail (or nails) and use a nail art dotting tool to dip into Butler Please, Licorice and Blanc and create your own Day-of-the-Dead inspired skulls.

Over at Costello Tagliapietra, bright, bold shades ruled on the runway. So for nails, Michelle Saunders kept is simple and sleek so as not to compete with the colors on the catwalk. She choose a matte navy look, which she created by combining two Essie shades.

This one is super simple. Apply one coat of Midnight Cami, followed by a coat of Mademoiselle. Let dry, then finish off with a layer of Matte About You.
