That’s right, dear readers! Today’s Beauty Queen story is dedicated to informing you about spring’s biggest beauty trends and most must-have beauty products. So, be it a juicy lip color you’re craving (à la Diane von Furstenberg), a nude nail (as seen at Prabal Gurung), or sunkissed skin (spotted at Michael Kors), you’re sure to find all the ideas and inspiration you need in today’s story! On that note, we present Beauty Queen: Spring 2011 Trends!
Extreme Side Parts
If you have been mulling over a new hairdo for spring, consider an extreme side part. Not only are they one of the season’s biggest trends—thanks to labels such as Marc Jacobs (pictured) and Badgley Mischka—but they are also extremely easy to create. To get a jump start on this feminine spring trend, wash and blow dry your hair, and then, using your brush, create a strong side part. To finish, use a liberal helping of a control hairspray—this will add shine to your hair and will help to hold your hair in place.
While there is plenty of bold color in this season’s lineup of beauty trends, there are also many neutral options. In fact, one of spring’s biggest nail trends is the nude nail, thanks to brands like Prabal Gurung (pictured). To get a jump start on this unfussy spring trend, paint your nails with Sally Hansen’s Without A Stitch, and then add a thin line of Sally Hansen’s Casting Call across the top—both will be out later this spring. In the meantime, Revlon’s Nail Enamel ($4.79) in Sheer Nude and Forever 21’s Nail Polish ($2.80) in Coral Reef are great alternatives.
As beauty fans, we are sure your makeup kit is overflowing with eyeshadow colors, but it is time to add a few more—namely, bright and bold shades such as sunshine yellow, raspberry, and orange. Labels such as Yigal Azrouël (pictured), Peter Som, and Derek Lam all opted for bright eyes this season, and why not? Nothing says “I am ready for summer” like a heavy dose of color! To get a jump start on this intense spring trend, pick up Topshop’s Matte Eyes ($14) in Painted, or try MAC’s Eyeshadow ($14.50) in Chrome Yellow or Electric Eel.
For spring, several designers took inspiration from the 1970s, which means the beauty looks followed suit. We love the 1970s-inspired frizz that was seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs (pictured)—it is a fun way to reenergize your beauty regime, try something entirely different, and make a bold beauty statement. To get a jump start on this playful spring trend, take tips from hairstylist Guido Paulau, who created the Marc by Marc Jacobs look. Paulau recommends applying a thickening lotion to your wet hair, before curling, pinning, and brushing it out for an oversized frizz. To finish, spray with a quick dry hairspray.
Here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we love accessories, so we were thrilled to see that chunky clips and barrettes were a major spring beauty trend thanks to labels like Rodarte (pictured). We love the classy-meets-cool vibe of these clips—they are practical and sophisticated, but they also have a fresh and modern charm. To get a jump start on this California-cool spring trend, create a strong part in your hair as per our earlier tips. Then, simply use Luv Aj’s Fool’s Gold Barette ($36) or ASOS’s Angel Wing Hair Clip ($14.34) to hold your hair back.
Spring and summer mean one thing when it comes to beauty: bright, bold colors. Happily, thanks to labels like Diane von Furstenberg (pictured) and Marc By Marc Jacobs, one of the season’s biggest trends is a vibrant juicy lip—think tangerine, watermelon pink, and orange. In addition to injecting your look with a fun pop of color, these playful hues make a quick and effortless statement without a lot of work. To get a jump start on this lively spring trend, try MAC’s Stylishly Yours Lipstick ($14.50) in either Cockney or Neon Orange.
One of the most noticeable and noteworthy trends this spring? Sunkissed skin, thanks to brands such as Michael Kors (pictured) and Versace. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a natural glow, you can get a jump start on this glowing spring trend by doing as they did at Michael Kors. Use Shiseido’s Luminizing Satin Face Color ($30) in Orchid, Tea Rose, Petal and Carnation across the bridge of the nose and cheekbones. Then, simply paint the rims of your eyes with Shiseido’s Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trio ($33) in Strata. Keep your lips bare.
If you have a carefree attitude, we’re positive you’ll like the unfussy updos seen at Proenza Schouler (pictured) and Rag & Bone. This hairstyle has a free-spirited vibe that is perfect for summer. To get a jump start on this happy-go-lucky spring trend, follow these tips from Proenza Schouler’s lead hairstylist Paul Hanlon: Spray your hair with a wave spray, then, using a diffuser, finger-comb your hair until dry. Tuck the top half of your hair into a French twist at the nape of the neck, leaving a few strands flowing free. To secure the look, spray with hairspray.
