Homemade Scrubs

Exfoliation is an essential part of your skincare regimen. Luckily, it’s also one of the easiest elements of your regimen to try at home, as well as being one of the most enjoyable. Our beauty experiment for the past month has been to try out three different homemade scrubs.

Usually, my skincare regimen consists of using St. Ives Apricot Scrub but I feel like it has lost its touch in the past few months. Rather than splurge on another scrub, I did a little research and came up with three quick and easy recipes for homemade scrubs.

All three of these scrubs had the desired effect; smooth skin and a fresh feeling, but some worked better than others. In terms of ease, the strawberry and brown sugar scrub was probably the easiest. It left a sweet smell. The honey and lemon scrub was far too messy and sticky. The oatmeal scrub probably had the longest lasting effect.

Before you start, tie your hair back and rinse your face with water. If you’re in the shower, stand for a few minutes and let your face gather the steam from the hot water. If you aren’t in the shower, press a warm cloth to your skin. This helps to open up your pores.

Apply the scrub to your face (avoiding the eyes), wait a few minutes and then rinse off. When rinsing, you could use a facial loofah or sponge, scrubbing softly in circles. Finally, splash your face with water and you’re all done!

ALMOND OATMEAL SCRUB RECIPE

1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tbsp dried chamomile
1/4 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup sliced almonds

Throw all the ingredients in a blender until they are a fine powder, then pour into a container or jar. When you are ready to use, mix a small handful in the palm of your hand with some water and smooth into a paste.

STRAWBERRY & BROWN SUGAR SCRUB RECIPE

1 large strawberry
1 tbsp oil
2/3 cup brown sugar

Sift the brown sugar into a bowl so it is fine and not clumpy. Chop the strawberry up and add it to the bowl. Using a fork, mash the sugar and strawberry together, adding the oil as you go, until it forms a paste.

NOTE: When making a scrub that involves sugar, take extra care to rinse off every last drop, or the sugar may irritate your skin and cause acne.

HONEY & LEMON FACIAL SCRUB

1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp olive oil
1.5 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp honey

Throw all the ingredients into a small bowl and mix well, until they form a smooth paste.
