Winter is approaching rapidly and for most of us that means switching up the beauty regime. Unless you are prepared, the cold and dry months of winter can really damage your hair and your skin. The good news is that it isn’t hard to put together a winter hair care plan. As long as you stick to your plan, a few quick preventative steps will protect and replenish your hair all season long.
Firstly, let’s get one thing straight. Holing up in your apartment for three months, only to emerge once the snow and rain has settled, is not a solution. In actuality, this could do your hair just as much damage as braving the elements. Indoor heating is your enemy! At least, it’s an enemy of your lovely locks! Just as you wouldn’t spend a day with your hair under a hair dryer, do not spend a day with your heating on full blast.
The most important element of your hair care plan is regular use of a rich moisturizing conditioner. Finding the perfect product is reliant on knowing your own hair. Thicker hair requires a heavier conditioning product, like a deep-reaching treatment that can be left on for half an hour, at least once a week. For those with fine, thin hair, avoid treatments and use a regular conditioner every time you wash your hair. If you have oily hair, avoid conditioning the hair closest to the scalp.
If you don’t have a lot of spare time, add extra moisture to your hair by running your hands through your hair after you have used a hand cream. The residue on your hands will give your hair a quick boost.

When it comes to washing your hair, following a few simple methods will help you keep your hair health and happy through the winter months. To start, choose a shampoo with as few chemicals as possible. A great ingredient to look out for is Shea butter. Shea butter is commonly found in skin products, but it can add and maintain moisture in dry hair, as well as retain softness and prevent breakages.
While you are washing, try to leave your hair hanging down, under the shower head. Use warm water, rather than hot water. Concentrate your conditioner on the ends of your hair. A quick blast of cold water, as shocking as it might be to the system, helps to lock in moisture.
When you step out of the shower, use an extra-absorbent towel to gently pat down your hair, trying not to rub the strands together. If you prefer to use a hair dryer, wait until your hair is damp, rather than wet, and stop the heat the moment your hair is dry. A good piece of advice, winter or summer, is to always avoid brushing your hair while it is wet as this can cause the hair to break.
Finally, try to get a good cut and color right before the season starts. Coloring always leaves a slight amount of damage so it is better to get your color done before the elements take their toll.
