Christophe Decarnin is leaving Balmain after five years as creative director. Balmain has not yet appointed a successor. “Since 1945, the house of Pierre Balmain has been one of the leading French and international luxury brands,” said Balmain CEO Alain Hivelin in a statement. “Christophe Decarnin’s work with the house’s design team contributed to the success that the brand has enjoyed in recent years.”
Decarnin was notably absent from the fall 2011 Balmain show in March. Hivelin said at the time, “He’s tired, after working on the collection. He didn’t go to bed until 5am. He’s not here, he’s resting.” Reports surfaced soon after, however, that Decarnin was absent under doctor’s orders, after seeking treatment in Paris for depression.
An announcement is due, possibly today, about the future of Balmain, with speculation pointing at an internal candidate as the likely successor.
