Catch A Fire: January 2010

This month’s Catch A Fire features: the new Bravo reality series, Kell On Earth; Backstage Dior by Roxanne Lowit; and Olivier Theyskens, The Other Side Of The Picture by Julien Claessens.

TV SERIES – KELL ON EARTH on Bravo TV // PR Guru Kelly Cutrone stars in her own reality series, Kell On Earth, that premieres February 1.

You probably know her as the PR guru who has mentored Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port on The Hills and The City. Thanks to her no-holds-barred attitude, Kelly Cutrone has won her a new reality series which should offer some honest insight into the fast-paced world of PR in the fashion industry.

Kelly Cutrone is best known for her wildly successful PR company, People’s Revolution. What many don’t know is that she is also a single mother who juggles motherhood with managing People’s Revolution, cursing at a lightspeed rate, organizing major fashion shows and writing her first book, “If You Have To Cry, Go Outside

I just spent half an hour watching the sneak peek videos on Bravo’s website. Although you should probably expect some pretty terrifying moments, Kelly is really brutally funny and honest and I think it’ll be an eye-opener; I loved her just chatting to the cameras about all the things people wouldn’t know about her.

BOOK – BACKSTAGE DIOR, by Roxanne Lowit, with a foreword by John Galliano and contributions by Valerie Steele // Roxanne Lowit has put together a fashion feast of photos from Dior’s backstage.

New York-based photographer Roxanne Lowit has been chronicling Dior’s shows for the last ten years. Through her lens, you can now experience the madness and chaos that is a backstage show, as well as feast your eyes on the beauty and wonder that is John Galliano’s designs for Dior.

This book perfectly captures those behind-the-scenes moments before and after a show takes place; from images of models running around amidst the chaos, to the last-minute preparations taking place, to the makeup and clothes. Adding to the aesthetic effect, the book contains a mixture of color and black-and-white photograph, showing off those lost moments perfectly.

This would make a great coffee-table book for the fashion lover; getting this inside glimpse at the artistry of Dior is worth the money.

Backstage Dior can be purchased from Amazon for $78.75.

BOOK – OLIVIER THEYSKENS, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PICTURE, by Julien Claessens and Sally Singer // A look at the career of former Nina Riccie designer Olivier Theyskens.

Olivier Theyskens dropped out of design school to create his first collection and, as they say, the rest is history. After being lauded by WWD, Harper’s Bazaar and The New York Times in his early twenties, Madonna wore a Theyskens design to the Oscars and set him on the golden path.

Since those early days, he had designed for both Rochas and Nina Ricci and his designs have been worn by powerhouse actresses like Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

French photographer Julien Claessens has put together a retrospective in this book, looking back at the whirlwind career of Theyskens. Theyskens even granted Claessens backstage access to his shows, so the book really does show every in and out of Theyskens life in the fashion world.

With his career in a bit of a limbo right now, there seems no other time to reinvigorate yourself with a bit of Theyskens on your coffee table. Olivier Theyskens (the book) can be purchased from for $81.
