BOOK – FASHION ETCETERA by Sam Haskins, with a foreword by Tommy Hilfiger // At the end of September, Sam Haskins released his first book in nearly 20 years, Fashion Etcetera.

Sam Haskins is a photographer known for his contributions to nude photography and his books, the most famous of which was Cowboy Kate. He has contributed his fashion photography to publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Allure. In 2002 he moved to Australia and he now lives in my home town, Canberra.

In 2006, the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra held a retrospective show of Haskins’ work. The success of the show inspired Haskins to create another book and Fashion Etcetera, his first book in two decades, was born.

Fashion Etcetera is an anthology of Haskins’ photography from the last fifty years. The book showcases some of his most famous photographs, including the nude portraits and editorials that he is famous for.

Fashion Etcetera has two editions; a special edition with a foreword by Tommy Hilfiger and the author’s edition. The collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger on the special edition resulted in a small capsule collection by Hilfiger of tee shirts, scarves and bags that feature an image from Haskins’ first book, Five Girls.

TV – LAUNCH MY LINE, hosted by Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2, presented by Bravo // On December 2, Bravo will premiere their latest series, Launch My Line, a competitive series focused on fashion that is meant to fill the gap left by Project Runway.

The show pairs up 10 established fashion designers with 10 ‘industry professionals’, including a fashion critic, a DJ and a choreographer. These industry professionals are already established in their chosen field but have always envisioned having their own clothing line. The teams must work together each week to bring these dreams to life and put together a complete fashion line.

Somewhat obviously, only one team will be declared the winner and their clothing line will be launched. The already-established designer will receive $50,000 for their tutelage.

Strangely, there are more recognizable names on the ‘industry professional’ side than there are on the ‘established designer’ side. No doubt there will be plenty of diva-esque behavior and unbalanced match-ups along the way.

In my mind, the biggest draw card is that Dean and Dan Caten, the creators of Dsquared2, will host the show (their minor turn in Fergie’s Clumsy video was enough to make me want to watch more of the designer duo). Stefani Greenfield and Lisa Kline will serve as judges for the show. Stefani Greenfield is the co-owner of Scoop NYC and Lisa Kline owns a Los Angeles boutique of the same name.

Launch My Line premieres Wednesday December 2 at 11pm ET/PT on Bravo.

BOOK – THE WORLD IN VOGUE: PEOPLE, PARTIES, PLACES by Hamish Bowles and Alexandra Kotur // On November 17, this one-of-a-kind book was released, showcasing the photographs that have appeared in Vogue for the last forty years, as well as never-before-seen photographs.

Put together by Hamish Bowles, the European editor-at-large for Vogue magazine, and Alexandra Kotur, Style Director at Vogue, the book’s authors alone make it a standout for fashion lovers.

The book contains over 300 photographs taken by some of the most well-known fashion photographers ever, including Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz and Richard Avedon. As well as photographs, the book contains the stories behind the photographs, with writers like Hamish Bowles and Truman Capote taking the reader behind the scenes to spoil them with anecdotes about the famous figures and events that the book has captured.

The book is a playground of photography. The book includes portraits, such as a stunning pre-election photo of Michelle Obama and an equally beautiful shot of Gwyneth Paltrow. There are intimate snaps taken at parties, including a photo of Kate Bosworth and Kirsten Dunst air kissing at the 2007 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala.

There are weddings, including a photo of Lauren Davis posing in her wedding gown at Casa Conde de Pestagua in 2008. There are spectacular shots of celebrities including Nicole Kidman dressed in Christian Lacroix Haute Couture and Angelina Jolie.

The World In Vogue: People, Parties, Places is available at Amazon.com for $47.25.
