Film Fashion: Love Story

With her almost jet-black hair, picture perfect complexion and signature au naturel eyebrows, Ali Macgraw, as Jennifer Cavelleri in 1970′s Love Story, inspired a generation of girls to wear knitted beanies and camel wool coats, and tell their boyfriends that “love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Of course, here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we look past the romantic sentiments and focus on one thing only: the fashion.

In fact, if there is one thing Love Story is known for besides, of course, its tale of tragic romance, it is its perfectly polished ensembles and flawless fall fashion. On the grounds of their Cambridge campuses, Jennifer and her love, Oliver Barrett IV (played by Ryan O’Neal,) wear camel wool coats, chunky knit scarves, and tweed jackets. To meet Oliver’s parents, Jennifer wears a striking red dress. To ice-skate in Central Park, wool sweaters and fur muffs. Accordingly, with fall just around the corner, we are paying tribute to Jennifer Cavelleri’s scholarly style with a selection of Love Story-inspired picks that are perfect for a snowy stroll across campus with your first love. Read on!

1. Striped Knit Scarf ($7.80) by Forever 21
Fall in New England calls for a slew of cozy accessories, including scarves, beanies and oversized coats. This rugby-stripe scarf is bookish without being boring, thanks to its bold black-and-white stripes. Wear it with a turtleneck sweater and skinny jeans for a modern look.

2. Yours & Mine Double Band Ring ($136) by BB Becker
No love story is complete without a romantic ring to seal the deal. Engraved with an amorous quote by Emily Bronte—”Whatever our souls are made of, yours and mine are the same”—this ring will remind you of your love wherever you go.

3. Italian Leather Gloves ($126) by Forzieri
Whether she was watching Oliver ice skate, building a snowman, or getting a breath of fresh winter air, Jennifer didn’t go anywhere without a pair of chic leather gloves. We already think these cashmere-lined gloves are perfect, but the fur trim gives them an extra layer of warmth.

4. Vintage Knit Flower Beanie ($9.50) by Charlotte Russe
Naturally, a Love Story tribute isn’t complete without paying homage to Jennifer’s now-iconic red knit beanie. Whether Jennifer was cheering from the sidelines at Oliver’s hockey game, or walking through the snow, you can be sure her beloved beanie wasn’t far away.

5. Brow Tech To Go Pencil ($26) by Smashbox
Of course, it isn’t all about fashion—we also noticed Jennifer’s thick black eyebrows, a statement-making look that is perfect for die-hard beauty fans. This double-ended pencil allows you to create a bold eyebrow that will turn heads and make an impact.

6. Pleated Skirt Dress ($40.44) by ASOS
It is an age-old conundrum: what to wear when meeting the parents? Naturally, Jennifer opted for a confident yet chic ensemble: an eye-catching red dress, pulled back hair, and a simple clutch. In our minds, this dress is a must-have for any Love Story-inspired closet.

7. Back In The Saddle Crossbody Bag ($139) by Lucky Brand
A stroll across campus wouldn’t be complete for Jennifer without a stylish satchel for her notebooks. We like this crossbody saddle bag for its versatility—wear it to school, sling it over your shoulders for a music festival, or take it out shopping in the city.

8. Dream Turtleneck Sweater ($68) by J Crew
In quieter moments, Jennifer and Oliver are seen in their apartment, reading books and studying. Jennifer wears a sleek black turtleneck sweater, a patterned mid-length skirt, and a wide waist belt—a simple and smart ensemble that can easily be given a modern twist.

9. Quirce Knee-High Boots ($149.96) by Nine West
A romantic stroll through the snow calls for boots that are fashionable and functional. We love these fur-trimmed boots for that very reason: they’re cozy, undoubtedly comfortable, and totally chic! Wear them with skinny jeans and a wool trench for a contemporary Jennifer-inspired look.

10. Sleeveless T-Shirt ($55) by Juicy Couture
Despite the cold New England weather, there were still moments when Jennifer wore summer-ready pieces, including a chic sleeveless top adorned with bold red-and-white stripes. This perfectly preppy t-shirt is an ode to Jennifer’s smart and stylish aesthetic that will give any outfit a classic-yet-contemporary element.

11. Premium Godet Check Trench ($400) by Topshop
Last, but certainly not least: the trench coat, Jennifer’s go-to piece in the cold New England winter. Of course, you probably know that camel is one of Fall 2010′s favorite colors, which makes this chic trench an investment piece, a closet must-have, and an on-trend purchase!

While there are many films and television shows that portray the sixties, no one is doing it better right now than AMC’s Mad Men, which returned last night for a highly-anticipated fourth season. Although the premiere brought with it many burning questions (Will Betty really divorce Don? Will the newly-formed advertising agency ever get a real office?), here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone there was only one thing on our mind: the fashion.

Thanks to award-winning costume designer Janie Bryant’s eye for detail – Bryant insists that the actresses wear proper girdles, slips and bras, and sticks to a specific color palette for each of the main characters – Mad Men is a consistent crowd-pleaser for fashion-lovers like us. Accordingly, in today’s Film Fashion story, we are paying tribute to Betty Draper’s elegance, Joan Harris’s boldness and Peggy Olson’s modesty with a selection of Mad Men-inspired picks that blend 1960s style with modern attitude. If you love to play dress up in timeless shift dresses, feminine full skirts and flirty peep-toe heels, we’re sure you’ll find plenty of ideas and inspiration in today’s story. With that, we present Film Fashion: Mad Men.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past month, you have probably caught wind of the Sex & The City 2 buzz; yes, Carrie and the gang are back for a second fashion-filled romp around Manhattan. This time round, however, fans can expect a little less drama and a lot more glamour and glitz as the girls head to Abu Dhabi for some desert fun.

For the second film, renowned SATC stylist and costuming veteran Patricia Field knew she was up for a challenge; not only was she up against the Middle East culture clash, she also had to contend with several 1980s flashback scenes. “[But] I saw the movie and it worked… Thank God,” she said. After a quick glance at the film stills and promo pictures, we think Field was spot-on; whether you’re simmering in the desert this summer, or roaming the streets of New York, take some style cues from four of the most fashionable ladies in film with our latest edition of Film Fashion!

The Runaways, in theatres now, chronicles the rise to stardom of two teen rebels, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. Set in the mid-70s, the two emerge from the youth of Los Angeles to form the now-legendary girl band, The Runaways, and pave the way for rocker women all around the world.

When it comes to fashion, the two stars, Joan and Cherie, couldn’t be more different. Joan Jett, who became known for her shag haircut and signature black-on-black style, has a rocker chic aesthetic that is rough around the edges. On the other side of the spectrum is Cherie. Starting out as a clean-cut, California blonde, she adopted a glamour-puss look that consisted of lace-edged bustiers and platform boots.

Whether you prefer Joan’s raw style or Cherie’s sex kitten appeal, get ready for a rebellious trip back in time with March’s edition of Film Fashion.

Dazed & Confused is one of those classic, coming-of-age films that will instantly make you wish you had grown up in the 1970s. Not just for the music and the laidback, breezy attitudes, but for the denim, leather and floral prints that make up the fashion.

The film is a “day in the life” of several Texan teenagers as they leave school for the last time and embark on the rest of their life. They finish their last classes, spend the evening at the Emporium listening to music, then hold an impromptu keg party and stay up until the sun rises.

A quick glance at the style of the era says the movie was spot on; from bell-bottom jeans to fringed vests and long, wavy hair, the girls in Dazed & Confused were hippies at heart. Get ready for a hazy trip back in time with February’s edition of Film Fashion.

Ever since we watched Liv Tyler’s turn in Stealing Beauty as the youthful and innocent Lucy Harmon, we have been enchanted. Not just by Liv, but by the Tuscan countryside and the romantic floral prints that make up the setting.

Stealing Beauty is a coming-of-age film that tells the story of Lucy Harmon, an American teenager who has travelled to Italy for the summer. She stays with family friends, looks for love and becomes determined to learn the intricacies of her mother, who has passed away.

The film is set in the mid-90s and Lucy embodies the early grunge aesthetic. Prepare yourself for floral slip dresses and chunky boots, long hair and androgynous button-down shirts. Lucy is a free spirit who is perfectly at home in this eccentric, bohemian community. With that in mind, we present to you this month’s edition of Film Fashion.

1. Mod Disc Pendant ($370) by Jane Hollinger // Lucy is a delicate young girl in Stealing Beauty and therefore, a delicate piece of jewelry seemed the perfect choice for a girl like her. The super-thin chain and tiny gold disc aren’t overpowering, making them the ideal pick.

2. Daytrip Pinstripe Shirt ($19.76) from Buckle // Lucy’s naivety lends itself to simple, unfussy clothes and this button-down shirt is a great example. This shirt is a closet essential and can be worn with just about everything, from skinny jeans and boots to floaty skirts and sandals.

3. Floral Pleat Skirt ($16.90) from Forever21 // Throughout Stealing Beauty, Lucy takes long walks through the Tuscan countryside, no doubt doing some heavy soul-searching. This printed red skirt is the perfect staple for your summer wardrobe; it is festive and fun and can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Do as Lucy does and pair the shirt with a loose button-down shirt, like the one mentioned above.

4. Canvas Slippy Slip-Ons ($18) from Urban Outfitters // Lucy’s character was prone to heading off for long walks and a pair of slip-on shoes were true to her aesthetic. They were comfortable, simple and totally unfussy, as was Lucy. Wear them with your slip dress for a down-to-earth look.

5. Ditsy Floral Scarf ($9.99) from Tilly’s // The eccentrics that live on the Tuscan farm with Lucy are nearly all artists. For the carefree artist who dabbles with paint and clay, a scarf that will hold back your hair is an essential item. We love this floral version with its shaggy fringe detail and subtle print.

6. MIA Cajun/Tan Combo Huarache Sandal ($39.92) from Lori’s Shoes // We love the simplicity of these slip-on sandals and can definitely see one of the bohemian artists wearing these around the Tuscan countryside. The rainbow leather adds a pop of color without being overly brash and bright.

7. Rhinestone Rose Clip ($5) from Wet Seal // Although it doesn’t quite compare to tucking a real, live flower behind your ear, we are pretty sure this hair clip will suffice. The delicate petals on this clip hark back to Stealing Beauty; Lucy spent hours writing poetry and thinking about those little things in life that inspired her.

8. Bow Print Silk Dress ($458.25) by Marc by Marc Jacobs // The floral slip dress was an absolute staple of the early-nineties and Lucy is no stranger to the look. This blue dress is a great addition to your closet. For a real 90s-inspired look, throw it over a white t-shirt and add chunky lace-up boots.

If one thing is for sure, it is that music and fashion have always gone hand in hand. Although Almost Famous is a film devoted to the rock & roll lifestyle, from the moment Penny Lane appeared on the screen, the film became a little less about the music and a little more about fashion.

Almost Famous is a coming-of-age film that tells the story of William Miller, a fifteen year old boy determined to become a music journalist. While trying to get into a Black Sabbbath concert, he meets Penny Lane, the leader of the Band-Aides, a group of girls, not groupies, that tour with the band to support the music. William is spellbound by Penny, who quickly becomes the heart and soul of the movie.

The film is set in 1973 and Penny Lane and her fellow Band-Aides are the embodiment of 70s fashion. Who can forget Penny Lane’s iconic coat, made from dark green suede, embroidered and edged with Mongolian fur trim? From Levis to floral peasant tops to Moroccan jewelry, the girls are free spirits who are happy to be on the road, living the hippie lifestyle.

With that in mind, our Film Fashion feature for October is a hip assortment of clothes that have the spirit of Penny Lane in them. From floral prints to faux fur, these pieces will put you on the road with the band.

Film Fashion: Almost Famous

1. Siesta Cardigan ($42.99) // This crochet cardigan is the perfect piece if you are looking to add a touch of 70s fashion to your closet. Dress it up Penny Lane-style by wearing it with a pair of faded, flared jeans and a fur and suede coat.

2. High Leg Boot ($400) by Peter Jensen // This pair of boots look like they were inspired by Penny Lane herself. The floral print might take us back to 1973 but the over-the-knee look is totally modern and so on trend.

3. Embroidered Fringed Top ($40) // The fashion of the seventies isn’t complete without a good dose of fringe detail. The sheer grey fabric of this top totally pops with its colorful floral embroidery, while the fringe makes it stand out. We can definitely see Penny Lane and her cohorts dancing backstage in this top, with the fringe twirling around them.

4. Pour La Victoire “Eden” Bootie ($168) // These cut-out booties add a touch of leather and lace to your outfit. Worn with a floral skirt or a pair of wide-leg jeans, the cream color adds some extra femininity to your outfit.

5. Faux Fur Hat ($95) by See by Chloe // Even the most chic Band-Aide has to have a bad hair day every now and then. This stylish-yet-ethical faux fur hat is perfect for covering up your carefree locks when they are running wild. Or, just keep it for those cold winter nights when it’s just you and the lead singer.

6. Faux Shearling Crop Bomber Jacket ($98) by Steve Madden // Penny Lane’s iconic suede and fur jacket is the standout piece of the movie. A stylish substitute was hard to find but this cropped jacket with shearling trim is ideal for the coming winter season, especially when worn with knee-high leather boots and vintage Levis.

7. Buttercup Tulips & Ikat Plaid Dress ($420) by Anna Sui // Though Anna Sui is known for her bohemian prints, we love this piece for its mix of plaid with floral. The print is perfect for any Almost Famous-inspired outfit and the long sleeves are an ode to one of the biggest trends this fall/winter season.

While there are many coming-of-age movies that portray the moodiness of growing up, one of our favorite examples is Sophia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides. From the hazy lighting to the dark beauty portrayed by the Lisbon sisters, this film certainly evokes a mesmerizing aesthetic.

The story of the Lisbon sisters is told from the perspective of a group of neighborhood boys, who were fascinated by the teenage girls, and are still haunted by their suicides 25 years later.  Growing up in the American suburbs in the 70s, the sisters portray a mixture of sweetness and burgeoning sexuality. There is a dream-like atmosphere at all times and the mood is whimsical, to say the least.

Costume designer Nancy Steiner lends to the virginal tone by dressing the girls in long white dresses and nightgowns and keeping their pale faces free of makeup. Although fashion certainly wouldn’t be at the forefront of one’s mind when watching The Virgin Suicides, it’s hard not to notice the layers of eyelet lace, tulle and Liberty prints that are featured throughout.

With that thought in mind, today we have put together a fabulous assortment of pieces, all inspired by The Virgin Suicides. From dusty pinks to hazy grays, these pieces will help you to reinvent the looks of the Lisbons.

Film Fashion: The Virgin Suicides

1. Floral Bangle Set ($16) // This set of floral bracelets are the perfect way to add a touch of femininity to your outfit. While the Lisbon sisters might use these to cover the bandages on their wrists, we suggest you just use them to accessorize.

2. Tiza Flower Tight ($32) // This pair of tights will add some bold color to any outfit and are perfect for taking the Liberty print into fall, while still channeling the aesthetic of The Virgin Suicides.

3. Chiffon Tiered Dress ($24.99) // When the Lisbon sisters head to their school dance, they are dressed from head-to-toe in the same look, a long, white floral print dress. We can only imagine that the most rebellious of the sisters, Lux, would have loved this pale pink chiffon dress for its subtle yet sexy style.

4. Liberty Print Cord Shorts ($70) // We can totally see the Lisbon sisters lazing on the lawn in the Indian summer, wearing pieces like this amazing pair of Liberty print shorts, while the neighborhood boys spy on them from across the street.

5. Floral Print Scarf ($28) // From curling up on a mess of scarves on their bedroom floor, to throwing them around their necks as they protested the removal of a tree, the Lisbon sisters loved a good oversized scarf and we think this is the perfect piece to take you back.

6. Francesca Top ($119) by Torn by Ronny Kobo // Although we’re sure there was many a girl wearing a similarly skimpy top in the 70s, the Lisbon sisters were certainly not allowed to wear something as brash as this. Give your Lisbon-inspired look a modern touch with this amazing strapless top.

7. Short Floral Dress ($212.50 (50% off!)) by See by Chloe // We can only imagine that when See By Chloe set out to design this dress, they too were channeling The Virgin Suicides. The print is perfectly inspired while the organza inserts add the final feminine touch.

Before Sienna Miller hit the headlines for her personal life, she was making waves in the fashion world for her “boho” style. Her fashion in the film Alfie seemed to have a direct influence on her personal style – though she helped style her character, Nikki, with clothes from her own closet.

Here’s how to get Sienna’s boho look from Alfie:

MAKE UP, HAIR & JEWELRY

- While keeping her make up on her skin and lips minimal, Sienna went all out on her eyes. Think smoky black eyes, long false eyelashes and heavy black eyeliner.

- When it comes to jewelry, you want to go for gypsy-style earrings with beads and large hoops. Also spend some money on a silver pendant that can be worn on a heavy, thick chain and some bangles. Go for 60s silver.

- Sienna’s hairstyle in Alfie was excellent – long, wavy blonde hair (with extensions) and thick, choppy bangs. Her hair was a beautiful, honey-white blonde.

Sienna Miller, Alfie

CLOTHES & ACCESSORIES

- Invest in a wide-brimmed, floppy felt hat. This adds a bohemian touch to any outfit plus it emphasizes the bangs. For those days when it’s not appropriate to wear a hat, tie a printed scarf around your hair.

- When it comes to sleeping/seducing, go for silk camis, boy briefs or your man’s shirt.

- The ultimate in boho chic is a fur gilet (try faux fur!) – wear it over your leather jackets, your slouchy dresses or with a pair of jeans – it’s the most versatile piece in your closet!

- Slinky dresses with mod prints or sequined edges are perfect – anything 60s/70s is a Sienna/Nikki must!

- For days out roaming the city, wear a pair of skin-tight leather boots that go over the knee – either with spray-on jeans or mini dresses.
