Fashion Stars Love Layering Skirts Over Dresses

Although there is plenty of room for experiment in the fashion world, the red carpet is often a place to play it safe, so we are pretty thrilled with the latest mini-trend to take the fashion world by storm: layering skirts over dresses. It all started with Blake Lively, who wore a sky-blue skirt over a lace Valentino dress earlier this month. Shortly after, Karolina Kurkova attended a fundraiser event in New York City wearing an Alexander Wang dress and skirt. Just two days after that, Diane Kruger wore a Derek Lam dress and skirt to the Berlin International Film Festival, proving once and for all that this is a trend to pay attention to. So the question is: will you try this look this season?

Mini Trend: Glam Black Jumpsuits

When stylish stars like Heidi Klum and Zoe Saldana flock to a particular look, we sit up and pay attention. And such is the case with the glam black jumpsuit, suddenly a red carpet mainstay thanks to Heidi and Zoe, plus Rooney Mara, Freida Pinto, Kate Moss, and Kourtney Kardashian. The question is: how do you work the look? If you are Heidi or Zoe, the key is to pick a jumpsuit with a subtly sexy silhouette and then let the piece do the talking for you. On the other hand, you could always add a dash of red, to really make your jumpsuit stand out, which is exactly what Rooney and Freida did—in Rooney’s case, via lipstick, and in Freida’s case, via a clutch. On that note, we want to know: would you try a glam black jumpsuit yourself, or would you rather leave it to the experts?

Mini Trend: Leather Pants & Sneakers

What do you get when you combine the rock & roll vibe of a pair of leather pants with the sporty aesthetic of sneakers? A new mini-trend, apparently. Yes, celebrities like Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Anne Hathaway have all been spotted recently wearing skinny leather pants and high-top sneakers, a look that has also been spotted on the streets. So, how can you get in on this mini-trend? The key to this look is to pair your skinnies and sneakers with an oversized coat or a chunky knit sweater, resulting in a low-key yet luxe fall look. Check out pieces like G-Star’s Tabi Super Skinny Leather Pants ($520) and Isabel Marant’s Perkins Sneakers ($396) to start.

Will You Wear Fur Sleeves This Fall?

One of the more surprising trends to show up on the fall runways was the use of fur sleeves. Brands like (from left to right) Peter Som, Burberry. Rebecca Taylor, and Alexander Wang all showed looks with fur sleeves—some added to tuxedo jackets, some added to knit sweaters, some added to long coats. The look is definitely hard to pull off, although we’re sure that some bold fashion insiders will manage to work the look to perfection. In the meantime, if you want to try the look, check out Rebecca Taylor’s Button Front Coat ($995) and Topshop’s Tinsel Bolero ($300) to start. And that leads us to the question: will you be wearing fur sleeves this fall?

Celebrities Are Loving Houndstooth This Fall

Ever since Salvatore Ferragamo showed a series of head-to-toe houndstooth looks during its fall 2011 show, celebrities have been eating up the classic black-and-white print. Stars like Maria Bello and Evan Rachel Wood have been spotted wearing houndstooth-print heels, Gwyneth Paltrow recently tried out a houndstooth coat, and naturally, Lady Gaga went for a head-to-toe look, complete with houndstooth-print sunglasses and tights. So, how can you try this look for yourself? Houndstooth is a busy print, so wear it in moderation—just one piece will do. Note: it looks best when paired with a solid color, particularly red. We like Amy Winehouse by Fred Perry’s Houndstooth Dress ($274.43) and Robert Rodriguez’s Double Breasted Cape ($695).

Mini Trend: The Jumpsuit

The spring runways were overflowing with references to the 1970s and since then we have seen plenty of 1970s-inspired trends sweep the fashion world. The latest mini trend to reference the era and pop up on our radar is the jumpsuit. While several celebrities have been spotted in jumpsuits lately, we particularly like the way Shenae Grimes, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, and Penelope Cruz have styled theirs. While Shenae and Penelope went for sophisticated jumpsuits—by Rebecca Taylor and Hakaan, respectively—Jennifer and Gwen turned up the glamour in shimmering jumpsuits. Jennifer wore a nude Michael Kors iteration, while Gwen wore a sparkling Stella McCartney. The question is: will you be trying this mini trend this summer?

Mini Trend: The Midriff

If you truly want to make a style statement, there is just one golden rule to remember: be fearless when it comes to fashion, whether that means wearing a haute couture gown straight off the Paris runway, or simply trying a new color or silhouette. This summer, one particularly bold mini-trend has been sweeping the celebrity circuit: the return of the midriff. Yes, dear readers, thanks to brands like Missoni and Marc Jacobs, a slew of stylish stars have been spotted baring their midriff. Back in September, Leighton Meester wore a printed Proenza Schouler ensemble to New York Fashion Week, while in April, Anna Paquin wore a revealing Cushnie et Ochs dress to the Scream 4 after party in Hollywood. Then, of course, there is the subtly sexy Helmut Lang ensemble Rihanna was spotted wearing while out and about in West Hollywood last week, not to mention the monochrome ensemble Zoe Kravitz wore to the Derek Lam + eBay party in New York earlier this month. So, there is plenty of inspiration to pick from. The question is: will you try the midriff trend this summer?
