Nothing says spring like a crisp, white blazer, which is exactly what Kate Moss (pictured) wore when she stepped out in Paris earlier this week. With warmer weather right around the corner, the time has come to start your search for the perfect transitional jacket. A transitional jacket – usually lightweight and super-stylish – will see you through those in-between months, no matter what the season.
Finding a transitional jacket that complements your style shouldn’t be hard as there are a ton of chic options out there. While we love Kate’s fresh take on the blazer, we are also particularly enamored with two current fads: nautical stripes and military chic, both which lend themselves perfectly to transitional jackets. Then, of course, there is the timeless chic schoolboy blazer and the always-on-trend denim jacket, both of which had to make their way into our story.
Whether you take your style cues from Kate or you prefer to hunt around for your own fashionable inspiration, check out our five favorite transitional jackets below and get inspired!

For the last few seasons, Balmain designer Christophe Decarnin has had girls all around the world swooning over his bedazzled, rocker-chic creations. For his Spring 2010 collection, Decarnin didn’t disappoint; once again, he created a look that included all of his signature embellishments, with an added military-chic twist to keep us guessing.
Distressed denim and torn tees were paired with low-slung, studded belts and sequined military jackets; jagged suede and leather skirts were mixed with super-tight leather tops and lace-up ankle boots in khaki and black. The collection was over-the-top yet brilliant.
As with all our favorite collections, the genius comes at an extravagant price. Enter our monthly edition of Runway To Reality, where we feature a selection of buys that will help you create a runway-inspired outfit at a budget-friendly price. If you love the Balmain look, but can’t afford the hefty price tag, this story is for you.

True story: I once bought a bright red lipstick and wore it fearlessly for a month, before I realized that it was not working. Not at all. Nine years later, I can safely say that I have done plenty of self-education and research to realize what shade of lipstick is right for my skin. Learning how to choose the right lipstick color for your skin tone is essential. The best part? It’s not as tricky as it sounds.

Looking For The Right Shade Of Lipstick
Look for a color that is just one or two shades darker than your natural lip color. You want to choose a color that will complement both your skin tone and the natural color of your lip.
Testing Your Lipstick Shade
Test, test, test! Make yourself into a human guinea-pig and try out all the colors you have picked. If you want to try before you buy, there are always test tubes available for this purpose.
Although the easiest way to try out your chosen shade would be to apply it straight to your lips, this is not hygienic! Instead, try applying the lipstick to your fingertips. These days, cosmetic experts say that the tone and texture of your fingertips are a better match with your lips, rather than the age-old method of applying lipstick to the back of your hand.
If there aren’t any test tubes available, the color sample printed on the box is usually a fairly accurate match, so find yourself a mirror and hold it up to your lips.
When you can, try testing your lipstick out in natural light as this will give you a better indication of the true shade. Hold it up to a window or, better yet, take it outside!
What Shade Of Lipstick Is Right For My Skin?
Fair Skin: Look for shades of pink and red with a blue undertone, such as a deep plum red or a light pink. Look for a shade of brown that has a pink undertone, like mocha. Avoid hot pink, reds with an orange undertone and pale browns with a yellow undertone.
Medium Skin: Look for shades of red with a yellow undertone, such as a deep red, blue-red or brown-red. Look for shades of rich, deep pink with brown undertones. Look for shades of brown with yellow or pink undertones, such as a rich caramel or creamy coffee. Avoid browns that are too pale.
Brown/Black Skin: Look for shades of red with a blue undertone, such as a deep plum red or a mahogany. Look for any shade of brown. Look for soft, sheer pinks with a beige undertone. Avoid pinks and reds with orange undertones.
What Should I Do If I Buy The Wrong Shade?
It’s not a big deal if you buy a shade that is wrong for you. Try blending one or two different shades to get the right tone for your skin. If you’re lucky, you might even find the perfect lipstick color for your skin by experimenting.
You voted, we wrote it. When we asked you, our readers, to choose a model for this month’s edition of Model Style, you clearly knew who you wanted: Australian model Abbey Lee Kershaw was the hands-down winner. Chalk it up to her quirky grin, her edgy style or her piercing cheekbones; whatever it is, you loved her and we were happy you chose her.
Abbey Lee was discovered when she won the Girlfriend CoverGirl Model Search back in Australia. After a few runway appearances down under, she moved to New York and since then, has become one of the world’s most sought-after models. She has been photographed by famed photographers like Steven Meisel and Mario Testino, appeared on the cover of Australian Vogue and V and turned up in campaigns for Gucci and D&G.
If you’ve ever caught a glimpse of her “off duty” look, you’ll know that Abbey Lee is quirky-cool and totally down to earth, which makes her the perfect choice for our monthly style profile. With that, we present to you our super-individual model muse for March.

For our first venture (far left) into Abbey Lee’s style, we’ve chosen an ensemble that is chic and feminine, with a tough edge: a flirty lace mini dress, layered under a draped velvet jacket and paired with lace-up boots. For a chic take on Abbey Lee’s style, we like Free People’s Pucker Daisy Lace Dress ($138) paired with this Irresistible Boyfriend Jacket ($129.99) from J Jill. Add a pair of Deena & Ozzy’s Side-Buckle Booties ($68) for the finishing touch.
When it comes to fashion week, Abbey Lee knows that it is imperative to remain comfortable (second from left). Here she pairs high-waisted, slouchy pants with a paisley top and another pair of her favorite lace-up boots. For a similarly stylish outfit, try these Roll Hem Denim Harems ($35.90) by Mango with Charlotte Ronson’s Draped Top ($92). Antik Batik’s Mugu Linen Satchel Bag ($116) completes the outfit.
As you can see, Abbey Lee likes to add a 90s, grunge element to her look (middle). Here, she pairs a long lace skirt with a cropped acid-wash denim jacket for a look that is edgy yet fresh. To try a 90s-inspired look like this Abbey Lee’s, we love Karen Kane’s Gored Long Black Lace Skirt ($29.60) mixed with the Bryce Jacket ($108) from Guess.
Even when it comes to wearing a mini dress, Abbey Lee knows how to add her own spin to the look. Here (second from right) she pairs a khaki mini with a fur-trimmed “Penny Lane” jacket and lace tights. For a similar style, try this Richie Tank Dress ($126) by Karen Zambos Vintage Couture with this Long Hooded Bomber Jacket ($119.66) from Asos. These Rosevine Lace Fullfoot Tights ($14) from Urban Outfitters work for this look and the next.
For our final look, Abbey Lee has mixed it up with a black mini and a draped pink blazer (far right). Grab the lace tights from the previous look and add a tight black bandage dress. Then throw on this Draped Jersey Cardigan ($63) by Splendid and add a pair of Restricted Scout’s Lace-Up Platform Boots ($54.95).

Take a quick look at the streets of Hollywood and you will probably get the same impression as us: rompers and playsuits are in for spring. One-pieces of all kinds – from mini rompers to tapered jumpsuits – are a fun way to spice up your outfit and give that little something extra, so it’s no surprise that many fashion-forward celebrities are taking the bait.
As with many budding trends, the look first emerged on the spring runways. While brands like Erin Fetherston opted for sleek, tapered jumpsuits in black, labels like Lacoste kept things flirty and feminine with ruffled rompers in white. This tells us one thing: the look is yours to make of it what you will, so try anything!
Whatever you choose, one-pieces are a great look for spring and will hopefully be here to stay for a while. If you’re curious about how to style this look, take a look at our four celebrity guinea-pigs as they’re doing all the work for you! If you want to try a romper or a jumpsuit this spring, just take your styling cues from Kate, Mia, Mischa and Jessica.

Kate Hudson, who has a penchant for pairing breezy hippie prints with laidback, Californian-chic accessories, wore a floral romper with a pair of Ugg boots while out and about in January (far left). This Sweet Springtime Romper ($118) has a similarly bohemian feel and would look great paired with flip flops or ethnic sandals, like this pair of Slim Ethnic Havaianas ($24).
While Kate went for an earthy look, Mia Wasikowska (second from left) went for a glamorous, electric look, wearing a metallic jumpsuit with slightly out-there hips! Although you may have the courage to pull a look like this off, we decided some toned down options were our best bet. Our three favorites: Dolce Vita’s Jolene Jumpsuit ($200.20), Dolce Vita’s Deena Combo Romper ($232) or Wink’s Yasmin Bow-Shoulder Metallic Silk Romper ($115.50).
Mischa Barton (second from right) also decided on a floral romper, pairing it with black tights and a pair of white round-toed pumps. You can get a similar look by grabbing Free People’s Floral Garden Romper ($108) and adding these Ambitious Pumps ($69) from Nine West. For a more refined look, do as Mischa has done and belt your romper at the waist.
Our final trendsetter is Jessica Alba (far right), who threw on a plaid romper with black tights and a pair of black riding boots, for a tough-yet-toned-down look. For your version of the real thing, grab RVCA’s Touche Romper ($49.97) and then add a pair of RSVP’s Rider Boots ($99).

FILM – Alice In Wonderland // Tim Burton’s adaptation of the Lewis Carroll book has inspired several Alice-themed jewelry collections, store windows and clothing designs and looks set to be the “Where The Wild Things Are” of 2010. With Johnny Depp in the lead role as The Mad Hatter, they’re off to a good start.
EVENT – Fashion Week // New York and London are over, Milan is taking place as we speak and Paris is set to begin later this week. The buzz around Fashion Week is always exciting. This season, several designers revived themes and designs from their previous collection, Anna Wintour stirred up some controversy in Milan and celebrities were noticeably absent from the front rows. You can’t escape the buzz!
MAGAZINE – Glossy // It’s a bit of a cheat, since we’ve featured Glossy Magazine on The Hot List before, but we’re more than enamoured with this London-based online magazine. The most recent edition features interviews with Nick Knight and Rosie Huntington Whiteley, so how can they really be missed?
IDEA – Hokey Croquis Fashionflat Sketchpad // This sketchpad is a tool for aspiring fashion designers and it comes complete with preprinted, proportional female croquis outlines that will disappear when you photocopy or scan. If you’re just starting out, or you want to revamp your design skills, this might be the best find ever.
DESIGNER – Isabel Marant // One of my favorite designers, Isabel Marant, is due to open her first New York store in the next few months. In the meantime, you can get your Marant fix from Net-A-Porter, who have just started stocking the Parisian label. While plenty of it is sold out, you can still grab an oversized lapis ring or a pair of feather drop earrings for a reasonable price.
MUSIC – Karen Elson // Gorgeous model Karen Elson is set to release her debut album this summer, which was produced by her musician husband Jack White. You can get a taste for her style with the teaser track “The Ghost That Walks” on her website, as well as watching the accompanying video. It’s dreamy, folky and has a Mazzy Star feel to it.
JEWELRY – ManiaMania // Set to launch soon, ManiaMania is a new jewelry line from stylist Tamila Purvis and art director Melanie Kamsler, two very fashionable Australians. Consisting of strong molten metal neckpieces and leather-and-crystal cuffs, the line was inspired by the 1973 film The Holy Mountain. Set to launch this summer (Australian winter), you should definitely be prepared.
TV – The Red Carpet Issue // Sundance Channel once again proves why they are the leaders of fashion television, with The Red Carpet Issue, a four-part documentary about the relationship between Hollywood and high-end fashion. Just in time for this year’s Academy Awards, the documentary features interviews with red carpet veterans like Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs and Milla Jovovich.
BOOK – Troubleshooting // New York writer (and part-time blogger for Urban Outfitters) Molly Young has just published a book entitled Troubleshooting, full of photographs, humorous vignettes and musings. Think of this book as your private view into the philosophical diary of a stranger, complete with art and designs by Chrix Luxton that put the finishing touch on her thoughts.
ART – WAFA Collective // WAFA (We Are Fucking Awesome) is a global artist collective that supports emerging artists, with members literally all across the world. The idea? To collaborate and inspire one another. All the art on the website was designed/created by two or more artists working together. The perfect way to make the world a better place.
If you love the thought of adding a twisted edge to your look this spring, you are in luck. This month’s edition of Beauty Queen features one of this seasons key looks for your locks: messy braids. Several of our favorite fashionistas have pounced on the look, so we decided to get down to business and find out how it is done.
First, a little history. As with many trends, our first peek at messy braids came from the catwalk. In September 2009, leading trendsetter Alexander Wang sent models down the catwalk with oversized, messy braids (top, left). No doubt inspired, Rachel McAdams, Mary Kate Olsen and, more recently, Lauren Conrad, have all been seen out and about in a twisted version of their own braid. The look was also seen in the print world: Karlie Kloss sported the look for the Hermes spring ad campaign (top, right).
While messy braids appear effortless, there is more to it than meets the eye. “This look is great on pretty much everyone. You can control how ‘messy’ you get but, in my opinion, the messier and less styled the better!” says celebrity hair stylist George Papanikolas, whose clients have included Nicole Richie and Miley Cyrus. “The key to getting this look is not trying to make the braid too perfect. It usually works best with hair that isn’t freshly washed, so it is a great look if you were out the night before.”

So how do you get this look? “The Alexander Wang look is smooth, so you need to start with a good basic straight blow-out. Use a non-greasy smoothing crème on damp hair before you begin blow-drying,” says Jessica Tingley, who has worked with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kate Bosworth. “Then, simply gather your hair into a low ponytail to one side, allowing soft layers to fall free and frame your face, then braid to the ends. After you finish the braid and secure the end, lightly rub your hand up the braid to ‘rough up’ the texture and give it that wispy, soft look.”
So what type of hair do you need? “This look works really well on long hair, with long layers or bands. The reason it looks so modern is that it has a soft volume and a wispy feel; it’s not tight and slicked back.”
Jessica recommends Aveeno Nourish + Volume Mousse, especially if you want to try the Rachel McAdams version, which isn’t as soft as the Alexander Wang version. “Start by applying a soft-hold mousse to add volume and hold, before blow-drying.”
For a finishing touch, George recommends Joico’s Design Collection Texture Spray to give your hair the roughed up, wispy beach texture, especially if your hair is clean or you want to give it more grit. “This will also help the braid hold together better,” he adds. “Don’t worry if a few strands are loose. It will add to the appeal.”
THANKS TO: George Papanikolas of the Andy Lecompte Salon and Jessica Tingley, an Aveeno celebrity stylist.
Dazed & Confused is one of those classic, coming-of-age films that will instantly make you wish you had grown up in the 1970s. Not just for the music and the laidback, breezy attitudes, but for the denim, leather and floral prints that make up the fashion.
The film is a “day in the life” of several Texan teenagers as they leave school for the last time and embark on the rest of their life. They finish their last classes, spend the evening at the Emporium listening to music, then hold an impromptu keg party and stay up until the sun rises.
A quick glance at the style of the era says the movie was spot on; from bell-bottom jeans to fringed vests and long, wavy hair, the girls in Dazed & Confused were hippies at heart. Get ready for a hazy trip back in time with February’s edition of Film Fashion.
