Preparation
Before you start applying your pink pout, you need to massage “a touch of concealer around the lip line,” says Brett Freedman, a celebrity makeup artist who has worked with celebrities like Camilla Belle and Sienna Miller. Why, you ask? This will help to highlight your lips when you do apply your chosen shade of pink lipstick, plus it will stop the color from bleeding outwards.

Choosing A Shade
Generally speaking, it is best to know which hues are appropriate for your skin tone before you start experimenting with this look. As a guide, women with fair skin should opt for coral-pinks and light beige-pinks, women with a medium skin-tone can try deeper shades, like rosy pink, while women with dark skin tones can try plummy pinks and pinks with blue undertones. We are particularly partial to the pink hue Lea Michele chose for the People’s Choice Awards earlier this month—Lancome’s Rouge In Love Lipstick in Roses in Love—which will be available in early February, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

How To Apply
Once you have chosen the right shade of pink for your skin tone, there are two ways to apply it. For a softer look, take Brett’s advice and apply your lipstick as a stain. To do this, you should smear the lipstick onto the end of one finger, and then blot it onto your lips until you have achieved the right shade and the color is even. In contrast, if you want to try a bold pink lip, we suggest you take the advice of Andrew Sotomayor, a celebrity makeup artist who has assisted with the backstage beauty at Dior and Marchesa. Andrew says: “To prevent bleeding, line your lips with a pencil that matches your natural lip color. For the most color payoff, apply lipstick directly from the tube.”
