Here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we are pretty democratic when it comes to finding fresh outfit inspiration—we don’t discriminate between the pool of celebrities, street style stars, bloggers, and fashion insiders. With that said, we are beyond excited about today’s Fashion Insider story as it features one of the most stylish fashion insiders on the circuit: Kate Davidson Hudson, the accessories director at Elle magazine. In fact, we are so excited that we want to jump right in, so click through to today’s story for all the details on what Kate wears and how she wears it!
What does she wear?
As you can see, Kate is fairly fearless when it comes to her personal style and isn’t afraid to mix it up. For instance, for the first outfit above, Kate layered a leather jacket over a peplum dress, creating a look with a bit of drama. For the second look above, Kate draped a fur-trimmed jacket over her shoulders, opting to wear it loose instead of the traditional way. For the third outfit above, Kate broke up an all-black look with a boldly-printed pencil skirt, which would certainly draw plenty of attention. Finally, for the fourth outfit above, Kate paired a silky blouse with wide-leg jeans, creating a cool yet casual ensemble.
How does she style it?
One of the things that Kate gets right every time is fit—she clearly knows which silhouettes suit her body and which don’t. Because she knows what suits her so well, she is able to play around a little more with her silhouettes—hence, the peplum dress—although most pieces are lean and fitted. Another key theme is color. While Kate does not steer entirely clear of bright colors, she does lean towards a darker palette—ranging from blacks and browns through to forest greens and deep purples. As for accessories, although Kate isn’t afraid of a statement heel here or there, she does tend to express her personal style via clothes rather than accessories.
How can I make Kate’s look my own?
If you are looking for a dressier look, opt for dresses and skirts that have interesting details. For instance, Alice + Olivia’s Victoria Peplum Dress ($264) features an eye-catching peplum waist, but it is also smart and sophisticated. Another great option is River Island’s Placement Scarf Print Skirt ($45). The scarf print ensures this skirt will stand out from the crowd without stealing focus from the rest of your outfit. Both pieces will look great with AllSaints’s Walker Leather Biker Jacket ($575) and a statement shoe like DKNY’s Anna Peep-Toe Booties ($142). If you want something a little less dressy, pick up either Zara’s Waxed Effect Trousers ($80) or J Brand’s Martini Flare Jeans ($146) and pair them with a pretty blouse—we like Winter Kate’s Falling Star Blouse ($121). Then, simply add a pair of simple pumps like Topshop’s Pablo Pointed Court Shoes ($130) before throwing Juicy Couture’s Faux Fur-Collar Blazer ($180) over your shoulders.
