Style Spy: Pastel Hues

It is time for the girly-girl inside of you to emerge – and we know you have one –because pastel hues are on the fashion horizon this spring. Pastels are a fun and lighthearted way to add some color into your look, so it’s no surprise that fashion-forward celebrities like Kate Bosworth and Nicole Richie have caught on to this look.

As with many budding trends, the look first emerged on the spring runways and became a major player during the Spring 2010 catwalk shows. Labels like Burberry Prorsum and Jonathan Saunders both utilized the cheerful and ultra-feminine look, perhaps meant as a slap in the face to the economic crisis and its effect on the fashion industry.

Whatever the reasons, pastels were a welcome change and are hopefully here to stay for a while. The delicate colors can be used to brighten up your outfit, a la Kate Bosworth, or as a contrast to a darker element, if you prefer Nicole Richie’s take. No matter your choice, you’re sure to lighten up any room you enter if you opt for pastels this spring.

Kirsten Dunst, who has a penchant for styling vintage dresses with modern accessories, wore a pale pink dress with a Peter Pan collar as she ran errands in Los Angeles (far left). This Striped Dress ($198) by Labour Of Love has a similarly chic feel and would look great paired with these Tab Ballet Flats ($18.99) from Charlotte Russe and a chic pair of wayfarer sunglasses.

While Kirsten went for a casual look, both Kate Bosworth (second from left) and Jaime King (second from right) opted for pastel hues when dressing up for various Hollywood events. Kate selected a simple pastel pink dress which perfectly complemented her complexion, pairing it with silver heels. Miu Miu’s Cotton Shift Dress ($323.75) is a great option for evening, while Topshop’s Knot Back Sundress ($65) is ideal for those hot summer days.

Jaime King decided on an eggshell blue dress by Burberry Prorsum, also pairing it with metallic silver heels. You can get a similar look by grabbing Burberry Prorsum’s Draped Silk Dress ($2,773) and pairing it with these Akila Platform Sandals ($78.71) by Nyla. For a more budget-friendly option, try this Ashanti Tunic ($103) by Edun.

Our final trendsetter is Nicole Richie (far right), who threw some pastel-colored McQueen scarves over her shoulders to offset her newly-darkened hair. For a version of the real thing, grab Alexander McQueen’s Marilyn Skull Scarf ($267.30). If you can’t quite justify that price, try out this Pastel Silk Look Square Scarf ($20.40) by Asos instead.
