For the last five (or so) years we have watched as the Olsen twins have transformed from child-stars to business women and serious fashionistas in their own right. After the twins were welcomed as new members of the CFDA in October, it seemed like the choice was obvious and we dubbed Ashley Olsen as our It Girl for November.
In 2007, the Olsen twins launched two fashion lines, The Row and Elizabeth & James. The Row, inspired by London’s Savile Row, is a high-end fashion line, while Elizabeth & James, named after their siblings, is a contemporary collection inspired by their own aesthetic, more than anything. Both lines have been well-received and The Row has even branched out into designing menswear.
Their influence on the fashion world doesn’t stop at design. Both girls have long been admired for their flair for fashion, although their personal style is very different. While they often share clothes, as all sisters should, Mary Kate generally opts for a more avant-garde look while Ashley favors a fresh-yet-classic aesthetic. From boyfriend blazers to oversized sunglasses to leather skinny pants, Ashley’s day-to-day look is considered and inspired, which is everything we need from this month’s It Girl.
#1. Here, our stylish It Girl pairs a simple, slouchy white tee with a pair of on trend leather cigarette pants and platform pumps while promoting the Olsen’s book, Influence. For a stylish take on Ashley’s look, pair Development’s Jersey V-Neck Top ($97.50) with these Suede Panelled Skinny Trousers ($210) from Topshop. For something a little different, we like Dolce Vita’s Trinity Studded Suede Pumps ($215).
#2. While her sister embraced the return of grunge wholeheartedly, Ashley’s take on the style is more subdued. Here, she pairs a plaid button-down shirt with a pair of skinny jeans and platform sandals, finishing off the outfit with two Olsen signature styles: the oversized bag and sunglasses. For a similarly stylish ensemble, try AE’s Plaid Shirt ($39.50) with Ksubi’s Super Skinny Zip Jeans ($229). Throw on a pair of Fahrenheit’s Fucci-01 Platform Ankle Strap Sandals ($30) in brown.
#3. Another fresh take on a classic look, here Ashley wears a perfectly tailored boyfriend blazer. She keeps the look modern by pairing it with a black bandage skirt, patent sandals and tousled locks. Given Ashley’s love of the blazer, it is no surprise that while scouting around for a similar look, we stumbled across the James Boyfriend Blazer ($395) by Elizabeth & James and thought it was ideal! Pair it with this Bandage Mini Skirt ($18.99) from Charlotte Russe and Ray-Ban’s Retro Cat Eye Sunglasses ($129).
#4. Proving that there is no girl untouched by the leggings trend, here Ashley works it out with a bomber jacket, leggings and leather boots. This effortless ensemble can be worn by anyone, one of the many reasons that we love Ashley’s style. Stuart Weitzman’s Tubular Square Toe Platform Boots ($595) start the look off nicely, especially when paired with BDG’s Faux Leather Hooded Bomber ($128). DKNY’s Small Antique Croc Work Shopper ($295) completes the look.
#5. As always, the girls were both ahead of the game when it came to headbands and certainly had a lot of influence over the growth of the trend. Heading to a fashion show, Ashley pairs a metallic headband with a sweater dress, coat, leather pants and gladiator-style heels for a more edgy take on her usual style. For a similar look, try Flori’s Sweater Dress ($115) with these Fume Heels ($34.90) from Alloy in chestnut. Add the leather pants from look #1 and then finish it off with Topshop’s Metal Embellished Headband ($36).
