The fashion world loves a style transformation story and in recent years, no one has done a better job of transforming themselves than Nicole Richie. With her new Winter Kate clothing line set to debut in early 2010, and her House of Harlow 1960 jewelry line a veritable success, Nicole’s style story made her the obvious choice for December’s edition of It Girl.
Nicole first hit the spotlight when she starred alongside Paris Hilton in The Simple Life. Back then, her outfits were focused around miniskirts and skimpy tops. In 2003, Nicole began working with celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and, soon after, a true fashion maven was born. After she split with Zoe, Nicole’s fashion star rose even further and she started her jewelry line, which will be followed up next year with Winter Kate.
Her style evolution did not go unnoticed. In 2008, Nicole spoke to FabSugar about it: “I’ve had my hair pink and brown and blonde and I think it’s all about trying new things; I’m really open to new looks. I love fashion so much that I definitely want to take it to the next level and I’m really excited about it all.” From her everyday looks to her maternity style, Nicole’s style is always inspiring. We picked some of our favorite looks to spotlight for this month’s It Girl.
#1. Here, our It Girl does what she does best: dressing up a simple jean-and-tee combo by accessorizing to the max, adding a colorful, knit hat and a long statement necklace. Aviator sunglasses finish off the look and add the 70s touch that Nicole loves. For a stylish take on Nicole’s outfit, pair a pair of black skinny jeans with a draped cardigan and this Mixed Metallic Beanie ($8.80) by Heritage1981. Add Dereon’s Long Pearl Chain Fleur de Lis Necklace ($42) and Ray-Ban’s Aviator Sunglasses ($129) to complete the look.
#2. Heading to a fundraiser event in LA in May 2008, Nicole chose a chic, streamlined look, pairing a fitted blazer with cropped skinny pants and metallic silver platform pumps. Her printed tee adds a nice, rocker-chic edge to the look, which is perfectly fitting for a girl whose father and boyfriend are both musicians. For a similar style, try Topshop’s Black Pull On Jeggings ($60) paired with Juicy Couture’s Shrunken Fit Jacket ($198). Throw on a pair of Bebe’s Veronica Printed Platform Pump ($149) as you walk out the door.
#3. As she is apt to do, Nicole mixes it up for this outfit, opting for a dressed-down, bohemian look that still has a bit of edge. She keeps her hippie style from going overboard by adding studded moccasins and a reptile printed mini dress. For a similar look, we love this Boa Ruffle Dress ($198) by Ella Moss, paired with these Leather Stud Detail Fringe Festival Boots ($20.40, reduced from $67.99) by ASOS. Finish off the look by adding Forever21’s Feather Felt Fedora ($12.80).
#4. One of the things we love most about Nicole is her penchant for wearing things over again – there’s no diva in Nicole! This effortless ensemble combines her aviator glasses sunglasses with a pair of caged heels and another Nicole favorite; the draped cardigan. Juicy Couture’s Draped Cardigan ($105.99, reduced from $178) starts the look off nicely, especially when paired with black skinny jeans and Chinese Laundry’s Love Me Pumps ($90). Nicole’s own House of Harlow 1960 Double Sunburst Leather Station Necklace ($72) will complete the look.
#5. Another fresh take on her favorite hippie-luxe look, here Nicole pairs a black mini dress with an oversized, printed bed jacket and a fringed hobo bag. Nicole didn’t let her second pregnancy stand in the way of looking stylish. If anything, it allowed her to carve out her place in the fashion stakes, proving that she had it in her to make any circumstance look stylish. For a similar look, try this Travelers Zebra Amber Jacket ($66.75) from Chico’s. Add this Suede Fringe Bag ($389) by JJ Winters and then finish it off with a black mini dress.
