It Girl: Solange Knowles

When it comes to the subject of our latest It Girl story—Solange Knowles—there are few phrases we can use to describe her personal style that would adequately do it justice. Free-spirited? Definitely. Exciting? Without a doubt. Infused with personality? Undeniably. But her personal style is just one of the reasons we decided to explore Solange’s fashion prowess. The other reason? Solange is poised to have a breakout year—she has just signed with Next Models, she has a new baby niece, and she is a face of Rimmel London. So what are you waiting for? Click inside to explore Solange’s stellar style with us!

1. One of the things we like most about Solange is that she is fearless when it comes to color. For proof, take a look at the outfit she put together for a party in New York City last month—a pleated yellow dress, purple sandals, and a neon pink clutch. There are two things to keep in mind when creating an outfit like this. First, confidence! Second, make sure you stick to simple silhouettes, as you don’t want your outfit to look too busy. To make this look your own, pair a dress like Sparkle & Fade’s Circle Dress ($39) or Jack by BB Dakota’s Thatcher Dress ($69) with Nine West’s Lookglobal Sandals in Pink/Purple ($89) and Michael Kors’ Gia Clutch ($450).

2. Another area where Solange excels is in the accessories department. For instance, check out the outfit she put together for an event at Art Basel in Miami back in November. Although her printed dress made a statement all on its own, she elevated her look by adding a pair of color-block sandals. These sandals added a fresh and fashion-forward element to the overall look, ensuring that it would turn heads all night long. To try a similar look, pick up a dress like Jill Stuart’s Kim Printed Silk-Twill Dress ($170). Make sure that the dress does catch the eye, but don’t pick out something over-the-top. Then, simply add a pair of Jessica Simpson’s Evannan Platform Sandals ($69) and you’re all set.

3. For a NYFW event back in September, Solange put together a colorful and chic ensemble that we just love. Her outfit—a ruffled pink top, tailored blue trousers, and yellow heels—is not for the faint of heart, but it definitely works. Why? Once again, Solange has opted for simple and sophisticated silhouettes, letting the colors and prints do the talking. Also, notice how the ruffles on her top are trimmed in a blue-ish hue that matches her pants? This gives the outfit an element of consistency, suggesting that it is well thought out. To try it for yourself, pair Madison Marcus’s Bash Top ($167) with J Crew’s Café Pants ($130) and Jimmy Choo’s India Sandals in Fuchsia ($495).

4. While Solange clearly isn’t afraid of bright colors and bold accessories, she is just as adept at creating polished red carpet-ready looks. For proof, take a look at the outfit she put together for a Rimmel event in London last September. Her white halterneck dress has a 70s-inspired vibe, but Solange ensured it erred on the contemporary side by pairing it with silver sandals and a fab cocktail ring. The result is a timeless and utterly chic look perfect for a major industry event. To make this look your own, team Mark + James’ Halter Dress ($540) with a pair of Elizabeth & James’ Snakeskin Sandals ($325). Then, pick up Anton Heunis’s Square Crystal Cluster Ring ($120) and you are good to go.
