If there is one thing that enamors us here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, it is the thought of a collection being born from the meeting of two creative but very different minds. Back in 2007, two designers came together to start making clothes for family and friends to wear on special occasions. Soon after, the idea of a full collection was tossed around and by Fall 2008, Sinister had been born.
Sinister was founded by Jerrmaner Bryant and Amanda Maestas. Although he now lives in the USA, Jerrmaner’s father was in the military and Jerrmaner grew up overseas. Much of his inspiration is drawn from his childhood, as well as European architecture and history. Amanda grew up in the USA in a household that valued antiques and classic movies. Many of her current designs are inspired by the silhouettes of the 40s and 50s.
The idea behind Sinister is to fuse two very different backgrounds and two very different design perspectives. Their shared passion is for design and style and, while they do have common inspiration like fairytales and travel, they are driven by the idea that Sinister is the meeting of opposites.
Their Fall 2009 collection (below) is a blend of 80s vinyl, vintage prints and lace and curvy 50s silhouettes. We picked out our four favorite pieces from their lookbook. Clockwise from top left:
1. Vinyl Corsage Dress // The shiny black vinyl is an instant throwback to the 80s while the body-con silhouette keeps it fresh and modern. This dress has a definite rock & roll vibe about it, which makes us think it would look perfect on Kate Moss.
2. Buffalo Plaid Jacket // The bright red, lumberjack plaid print on this jacket is the ideal ode to the 90s grunge scene, making this jacket perfectly on trend. The cropped size is too small for winter, but it would be the ideal layering piece for your fall/spring outfits.
3. Green Tulle Dress // The gorgeous sage green color of this dress is romantic and flirty and is clearly inspired by vintage fabrics. However, the babydoll shape and short, short hemline make it the perfect piece for the modern girl who wants to dress for the 21st century.
4. Emphasized Hip Skirt // As we mentioned, Amanda is inspired by the silhouettes of the 40s and 50s and this piece is clearly an ode to those eras. The balloon shape of the skirt, combined with the tight waistband and lace bandeau top, turn this skirt/top combo into a form-fitting dress.
Currently, Sinister take orders via the Sinister Collection website and sizes for the collection run from 00-10, although made-to-measure orders are available. Prices for the Fall 2009 collection start at $225 and run through to $325.
