Matthew Williamson surprised everyone at June’s Resort 2011 presentation, opting for a streetwise, urban vibe over the exotic caftans and beach-ready prints expected of him. Happily, Williamson hasn’t abandoned the bright caftans and swimwear he is known for; instead, he is channeling his beachy bohemian-luxe aesthetic into a new, separate collection of beachwear called Matthew Williamson Escape, a capsule collection of “luxury pieces for the high summer season.”
The launch of Escape brings to mind one question: what took so long? The collection is focused on the pieces that Williamson’s fans pine for, from caftans to jumpsuits to swimsuits, and is teeming with beach essentials. Draped cardigan cover-ups are seen in tangerine, cobalt blue and soft green; swish caftans, mini or maxi, are smattered with hippie-esque prints; silky jumpsuits are embellished with a techno-tribal pattern while smock dresses are adorned with ikat-inspired prints; and, cut-out one-pieces are decorated with painterly prints while ruched bandeau bikini tops come in bright tropical colors.
Escape launches in stores in January 2011, just in time for your mid-winter getaway to the Carribean. Prices are expected to start at £165 for a bikini and run through to £1,095 for a luxe dress.
