Model Style: Liya Kebede

Although any subject of our Model Style story must have a unique and chic sense of personal style, we can wholeheartedly say that today’s subject—Ethiopian model Liya Kebede—is stylish both inside and out. After all, not only is Liya blessed with a gorgeous face, an enviable body, and great fashion sense, but she also works tirelessly behind the scenes as a goodwill ambassador for WHO and is known for her philanthropy. For all these reasons, we knew she was the perfect subject for our latest Model Style story, so click through to discover all the details on what Liya wears, how she wears it, and how you can make her style your own. Read on!

What does she wear?
It doesn’t take a genius to see that Liya looks good in pretty much everything she wears—whether she is dressing up or down. For the amfAR New York Gala back in February, Liya wore a bright white blazer, a slinky top, and silky racing-stripe pants (far left), showing that she has plenty of panache when it comes to boy-meets-girl looks. Just a few days later, she changed it up for Edun’s fall 2012 runway show, wearing a printed dress, a fur bomber, and white Isabel Marant sneakers (second from left). In March, Liya put together a sleek look for a screening of The Hunger Games in New York City: a printed black-and-white blouse, cropped skinnies, and strappy sandals (second from right). Fast forward a few days, Liya was spotted at the premiere of Sur la Piste du Marsupilami in Paris, France, wearing a white top and mini skirt, both by Isabel Marant, with black sandals (far right).

How does she style it?
As you can see, Liya has a tendency to pick pieces that catch the eye because they feature an interesting detail—whether that is a racing stripe, a mish-mash of textures, a bold print, or an unusual silhouette. On the flip side, she doesn’t rely on statement-making accessories to make a statement; in fact, Liya will often just stick with an amazing pair of shoes. While this minimalist formula looks and sounds easy, it definitely requires one thing: knowing your body, knowing what looks good and what doesn’t, and having confidence that your outfit will live up to itself. Naturally, Liya checks all those boxes!

How can I make Liya’s look my own?
If you are a fan of Liya’s less-dressy ensembles, we have rounded up a number of options that have that same simple-yet-stylish vibe. For instance, pairing Zara’s Contrasting Ribbon Trousers ($60) with a white blouse and Elizabeth & James’s New Sammy Blazer ($395) will instantly create an ensemble that mimics Liya’s boy-meets-girl vibe. We also recommend you pick up a pretty printed blouse—we like Clover Canyon’s Printed Crepe & Silk Top ($195) and Elizabeth & James’s Floral Luxe Pajama Blouse ($295). Pair your blouse with your favorite jeans and a pair of Jessica Bennett’s Rayne Sandals ($108) and you will have a look that lasts all day and night. Happily, it is just as simple to make Liya’s dressier ensembles your own. If you like to make a statement by using a bold print, we suggest you look for pieces like Diane von Furstenberg’s Shina Sleeveless Dress ($385) and Tory Burch’s Melora Dress ($367), both of which would work well with a fur bomber jacket and Isabel Marant’s Betty Leather & Suede Sneakers ($680). If you prefer to shy away from prints, you can still make Liya’s style your own by picking up pieces like Pepe Jeans’s Ruffle Front Sheer Blouse ($107) and pairing it with Paul & Joe Sister’s Mini Skirt ($125). Happy shopping!
