If you type the words ‘It Bag’ into Google, you’ll find a stream of pages that all proclaim the It Bag is dead. Over. Kaput. However, Mulberry, the British fashion company known for its luxury leather goods is planning to change all that when it releases the Alexa bag on January 12, 2010.
The bag is a twist on the classic and iconic Bayswater bag; a satchel style that slouches in all the right places, with a top flap that is a nod to the Bayswater. The Alexa bag has pale gold hardware and comes in an array of colors, from leopard print to brown to a patent black. It has added straps and can be worn as a shoulder bag, carried as a hand-held or even worn as a cross-body bag.
Of course, the muse behind the bag, British television presenter Alexa Chung, has been seen out and about with the bag for the last few months. “It’s such an honor. I had no idea they were doing it until they presented it to me,” she said. Although the bag was inspired by and named after Alexa, Mulberry also noted that the bag reflects their “major seasonal themes of schoolgirl naivety and effortless charm,” two qualities which could similarly describe Alexa’s own aesthetic.
While it may come as a surprise given the amount of celebrity/designer collaborations these days, Mulberry shied away from incorporating Alexa into the design process. “I asked if I could get involved with the design process and they said no!” she has said. “I’ve always carried around a men’s Mulberry briefcase that’s totally battered and they’ve taken inspiration from that apparently.”
The Alexa bag will start at £695 while the Alexa clutch will start at £450. Now that you know the release date and the price, you better start saving.
