New York Fashion Week, Fall 2011: Day 2

Yesterday—day two of New York Fashion Week—saw runway shows from (from left to right) Rag & Bone, Rebecca Taylor, Jason Wu, and Peter Som, to name just a few. Accordingly there is plenty to talk about—Rag & Bone’s expert layering and fun sources of inspiration, Jason Wu’s luxe lace embellishments, and Peter Som’s dark-meets-neon palette. So, let’s get started!

David Neville and Marcus Wainwright, the designers behind New York-based, London-born label Rag & Bone, had a profusion of references up their sleeves for fall—skiing, Scotland, England, the duke of Windsor, game keepers, deer stalking, and the list goes on. This bundle of sources did not deter, however, from Rag & Bone’s message: layering is key, your fall outerwear should come in tartan or stripes, your fall boots should be chunky and ready for a day in the country.

Speaking of outerwear, Peter Som offered plenty of slouchy silhouettes to pay attention to—from an oversized utilitarian anorak to a white wool coat with patches of black fur. We also couldn’t help but notice Som’s bright footwear, the result of a second collaboration with British footwear designer Charlotte Dellal. Green pointy toes, enveloped in an orange bow, or a similar version, in inky-blue and gold? Yes, please.

Then, of course, there is First Lady-favorite Jason Wu, who presented a fall collection inspired by “baroque sportswear.” What that meant, evidently, was lace. The collection included more than 15 different types of lace—it was applied to the sleeve of a grey wool coat, it lined the sides of a pair of blue cigarette pants, it was appliquéd across a white sheath dress. Models even wore “sculpted lace masks.”
