New York Fashion Week, Fall 2011: Day 3

Yesterday—day three of New York Fashion Week—saw a slew of runway shows, including (from left to right) Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung, Band Of Outsiders, and Charlotte Ronson. There was, naturally, a little something for everyone on Saturday—from fur-trimmed sunglasses at Alexander Wang to undone-glam dresses at Prabal Gurung, from modern-boho looks at Charlotte Ronson to perfect outerwear at Band Of Outsiders. So, let’s get started!

As usual, the Alexander Wang show was one of the most highly anticipated of the New York season. It is safe to say, this season, he delivered. There was plenty of the sexy “downtown cool” vibe that Wang has become known for, mixed with a heavy dose of accessory attitude—think: fur-trimmed sunglasses, metallic sandals, cigarette box-shaped clutches. As for the clothes, when fall rolls around, you’ll be dying to wrap yourself in a draped ombre poncho or fur-trimmed bomber jacket.

On the other side of the spectrum, in a way, is Prabal Gurung, a designer who leaves the downtown attitude behind in favor of glamorous cocktail dresses and red-carpet numbers. Gurung’s fall collection was simultaneously inspired by Great Expectations’ Miss Havisham, a character he sees as “rich, heartbroken and crazy,” and the girls he has seen out and about in Brooklyn. Translated for the runway, that meant a red party dress, belted at the waist, sliding off the shoulder of Karlie Kloss. Or a white cocktail dress, embellished with a black lace print and a ribbon of red across the waist. Or a blue-gray strapless gown with layers of tulle.

On yet another side of the spectrum, there is Band Of Outsiders, the Los Angeles-based label designed by Scott Sternberg. This was the first-ever runway show for Band Of Outsiders and it comprised all three of the lines under Sternberg’s direction: the menswear line Band Of Outsiders, the women’s line Boy By Band Of Outsiders, and the more affordable women’s line, Girl, which launched last season. Citing the book The Stonemasters as inspiration, as well as old photographs of rock climbers, the show included a layered mix of Native American-inspired prints, oversized outerwear, rugged shirts, laced-up hiking boots, and more. In other words, plenty of separates for the modern vagabond.
