New York Fashion Week, Fall 2011: Day 4

Yesterday—day four of New York Fashion Week—brought us to the halfway mark. Of course, we didn’t get this far without a brand new batch of shows! Yesterday, labels such as (from left to right) Diane von Furstenberg, Preen, DKNY and Thakoon showed collections to adoring audiences. As you can see, the runways played host an assortment of colors, textures, embellishments and silhouettes, which means there is plenty to discuss, dear readers!

Diane von Furstenberg’s show is always a favorite among the fashion set, perhaps in part thanks to her storied history and the fact that, well, she has earned it. Moving along. For her fall 2011 collection, von Furstenberg looked to an assembly of American Legends for inspiration—namely: philanthropist Millicent Rogers, fashion designer and heiress Gloria Vanderbilt, and former Vogue editor Diane Vreeland. On the runway, that meant strong separates in a wide array of color stories: a black-and-white geometric printed wrap dress was paired with fringed boots and a Stetson-inspired hat. A slinky jade-green skirt was paired with a turquoise blouse and then layered under an oversized forest-green fur. Then, our favorites: a series of sequined gowns (in blue, red and black) that are ready for an outing on the red carpet.

Onto the next: DKNY. The fall 2011 collection from Donna Karan and her team was called New York Mods, and rightly so. The first ten-or-so looks featured a skinny pants, mini dresses, oversized cape coats, and hip hats, in a color palette of black, navy blue, red and white. From there, however, the mood changed a little—colors became brighter, stripes became wider, and the silhouettes looked free and easy. The entire collection had a cool preppy vibe and, come fall, we’re sure you’ll spy plenty of DKNY on the kids of America.
