New York Fashion Week, Fall 2011: Day 5

Yesterday—day five of New York Fashion Week—saw shows from established labels, risings stars, and new additions, including (from left to right) Marc Jacobs, Ohne Titel, Tracey Reese, and Zero + Maria Cornejo. Naturally, there was plenty of excitement in the air when the Marc Jacobs show took to the catwalk. That same excitement was felt when Olivier Theyskens presented his first every runway show under the Theyskens’ Theory label. On that note, we have plenty to discuss, so let’s get started!

One of the most highly anticipated shows of the day was, of course, Marc Jacobs. One of the things we love most about Marc Jacobs is how every collection is so different from the last—instead of slightly changing the silhouettes, color palette, and fabrics from season to season, we are usually treated to a collection that feels brand new and fresh. For fall 2011, Jacobs wanted to counter the easy-breezy silhouettes of his spring 2011 collection by showing something “strict and severe.” So, what did that mean? Firstly, polka dots—and plenty of them. Also, latex, lace, scalloped metallic skirts reminiscent of a mermaid tail, shimmering sheath dresses, tilted vinyl berets, textured loose-fit pants, boxy shoulders, and so much more.

Onto Olivier Theyskens. When the first Theyskens’ Theory collection was revealed last season, most fashion fans were in high spirits. It looks like the same will be said about fall. A cable-knit sweater was paired with dressy shorts, a crochet top was layered over a printed maxi skirt, a burgundy leather coat was paired with mustard corduroy jeans—to us, it seems like there was something for every New York City girl who has her eye on the runways.
