I have always been a fan of Paris Chic. After flicking through a notebook the other day and finding a picture of Jane Birkin, I decided to spend a little more time researching the finer points of Paris Chic.
I think we all can agree that the number one style rule in Paris and the rest of France is to be simple. It’s not about piling on loads of layers and jewellery to create one heavy look. It’s more about picking a few key pieces and ending up with a stylish outfit. The French understand that it’s easy to be comfortable and stylish at once and that one doesn’t forsake the other.
- Wear simple clothes in neutral colours that can be worn with as many of your other pieces as possible.
- Always buy a key piece “of the season” to give your closet a quick, stylish update.
- Again, simplicity is key and when it comes to your hairstyle, think no differently.
- Invest in a gorgeous perfume that leaves people watching you as you go.
- Go for natural make-up.
It seems that the French look can be summed up in one word: effortless. Think “I don’t care how I look when I walk out the door” but do care. Just not too much.
Three very stylish French women (and unfairly, all from the same family) are Jane Birkin and her daughters Lou Doillon and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Closet must-haves for these three? Luxuriously soft knit sweaters, denim cut-off shorts, tousled “bed” hair, an expensive trench coat, black mini dresses and always black stockings.
