PretAPortobello is the online version of London’s famous Portobello Road Market, selling all the quirky clothes, original accessories and one-off vintage buys that you would find if you spent your Saturday slogging your way through the Notting Hill crowds.
Fortunately, with PretAPortobello, you can avoid the hordes of tourists and the fickle London weather! Comprised of a series of a virtual market stalls from independent designers and thrifty stallholders, you can find anything from a bohemian vintage maxi dress to a metallic gold blazer.
In 2005, I moved to London and for almost a year, living in Notting Hill. Most Saturdays were spent trawling the Portobello Road Market, looking for vintage treasures and antique trinkets. In 2007, when I left London, I have to admit that the thing I missed most were the markets, not least Portobello Road. Although they are still based in London, the inspiration behind creating PretAPortobello was similar – the founders wanted to create a website for those who couldn’t make it to the market.
If you’re a die-hard fan of the market mentality, you’ll also love the Let’s Trade section, where you can haggle for items that don’t have a set price/value, potentially snagging a huge bargain.
Prices in the vintage section range from £7 (approximately $12 US) for vintage costume earrings to £995 (approximately $1,638) for a vintage Balenciaga maxi dress. Prices in the new section range from £4 (approximately $7 US) for a leather key fob to £240 (approximately $395) for a leather bucket bag. Postage to the US is £16 (approximately $27 US).
