Q&A: BaubleBar Founders Daniella & Amy

Meet Daniella and Amy, the co-founders of BaubleBar, a daring new concept in the world of jewelry. They met in New York City six years ago, became firm friends, moved to Boston together to attend Harvard Business School, and the rest, as they say, is history. Late last year, they founded and launched BaubleBar, a one-stop online shop for jewelry fans. Each month, Daniella and Amy handpick a selection of jewelry from a wide range of designers and put it together to form the Trend Collection. Pieces from the Trend Collection are introduced on Mondays and Wednesdays and are available for six weeks only. If you prefer stability, however, you can shop from the Classic Collection, a selection of timeless styles that are available 24/7. The best part? The average price for each piece is around $70!

On that note, we suggest you sit back and get to know Daniella and Amy and discover how BaubleBar works, what they have in store for the future, and what they look for in a jewelry collection.

1. Hi guys! Firstly, can you introduce yourselves to our readers and tell us how and when you first met?
We met six years ago as investment banking analysts and became fast friends – it’s easy to bond when you’re working 100+ hours a week and surrounded by men who don’t understand the value of a frozen yogurt break or a shopping trip to Saks to clear your head. We remained very close and ended up going to Harvard Business School together, which is where we came up with the initial concept for BaubleBar.

2. Who inspired you to start BaubleBar? What steps did you take to launch BaubleBar?
We met six years ago, but came up with the initial concept for BaubleBar about a year and a half ago. We were buying shoes, talking about getting statement earrings for an upcoming wedding, and suddenly realized that fashion jewelry was the only category where we had no “go-to” destination for browsing and buying, either online or a physical store. We wanted to build that one-stop shop for fashion jewelry. We started meeting with different designers and finding people who understood our vision and were excited to work with us to build that destination site.

3. How does BaubleBar work for the average girl who loves to shop and loves fashion?
BaubleBar is an incredible resource for the average girl because it lets her really experiment with different trends and different accessories without having to break the bank. We work incredibly hard to cut out the middle man to bring women amazing product at prices that don’t force them to sacrifice enjoying a little indulgence.

4. What makes BaubleBar different?
In addition to cutting out the middle man and offering women incredible value, we really focus on providing them with a selection of the best of the best of what’s out there – enough breadth that they can find something for any occasion, but still curated [enough] so browsing the entire site is an enjoyable experience and not overwhelming.

5. What do you guys do on a daily basis? Have you divided up the business so that each of you works on a different area, or do you prefer to work as a team on everything?
We definitely divide and conquer so that we can be efficient but we also like to make big decisions together and with our broader team. Cross-checking decisions across different opinions is really critical towards thinking through all of the different issues.

6. What do you look for in a jewelry collection? How does a new line make it onto the site?
First and foremost, the pieces have to look and feel rich so we are big on selecting high-end workmanship and materials. When selecting pieces and creating collections, we try to keep in mind that women have such broad style preferences when it comes to this particular category and also use it in so many different ways. It’s equally as important to have a great statement necklace that transforms an outfit as it is to have a beautiful pair of stud earrings that add a subtle finishing touch to anything you’re wearing. To that end, we are all about offering variety to satisfy those needs, so we try to keep a good mix of different types of jewelry and also try to consistently offer a variety of on-trend styles alongside wardrobe staples that you will reach for again and again.

7. Are you noticing any major trends in the jewelry world?
We have been seeing a lot of rose gold jewelry popping up, so we just did a collection around it. It is such a beautiful color and it was refreshing to see a wide range of styles, from a delicate pendant to a modern cuff bracelet.

8. What tips do you have for someone wanting to start a business in the fashion industry? What is the biggest lesson you have learned?
We think the most important thing you can do when starting any business is to be comfortable questioning yourself and constantly adapting to change. We have come such a long way, and it’s because we have incredible customers who have proactively told us what they like and what they don’t like. Being open to that feedback, really listening to your customer, and making changes based on what they tell you are key to being successful.

9. What do you have in store for BaubleBar over the next few years? Any secrets you can let us in on?
We have so many! Our goal is to really be that one-stop shop for fashion jewelry so we see a lot of opportunities to meet more of the consumer’s needs in this space. We are always eager to add new product and meet with new designers on a daily basis. Another area that has been big for us is bridal. We have coordinated bridesmaids gifts for so many women who contact us through the site, and we will be rolling out a more dedicated platform for this need shortly. We are also incredibly focused on giving users more interesting ways to interact with the site beyond just buying. Right now we have some style content to show people how we would wear certain pieces, but we are planning to add more content to allow for user input regarding what we carry on the site. We’d also like to partner with other apparel brands or sites to allow people to buy full looks.

10. Finally, just for fun: can each of you tell us what your favorite piece of jewelry is, where you got it, and the story behind it?
Daniella: I have a very delicate gold and onyx ring that my grandmother gave to me – whenever I wear it, it reminds me of her, which is why I love it so much. It’s also this great, timeless style that I can wear with just about anything so I love wearing it solo or mixing it up with other rings.

Amy: My favorite piece of jewelry is my dress watch. My parents got it for me as a gift to commemorate a special occasion and it’s a great reminder of that time in my life. I also feel as though putting it on instantly dresses up whatever it is that I’m wearing.
