It is well-known that Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy are film enthusiasts, so it is no surprise that their latest undertaking pays homage to their love of the film world. In honor of the 50th anniversary re-release of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, starring über-cool actress Jean Seberg as an American journalist in Paris, the sisters have teamed up with Rialto Pictures to create two limited-edition tees inspired by the film.
The first tee is a modern take on the “New York Herald Tribune” t-shirt Seberg wore in the film (pictured); the second, an original design inspired by the film. “We have been influenced by Godard’s rejection of the status quo and have approached our work with the same desire,” said Laura. “He is a renegade. In Breathless, he broke all of the rules and formulas.”
The limited-edition tees will be available at Colette in Paris, Dover Street Market in London and Barneys New York in the United States. The sisters are also working with graphic designer Patrick Li to create a new poster for the film’s re-release, as well as creating window displays inspired by Breathless for Barneys New York.
