For fashion fans, there is plenty to think about all year round: (a) putting together your winter shopping list; (b) which spring shows will you take inspiration from?; and, (c) how many new swimsuits and sundresses will you need for summer? And those are just three of the things you probably have on your mind right now! Happily, there is plenty of inspiration in our latest edition of Seasonal Style. Today’s subject? Nicole Richie—actress, designer, and best-selling author. Now, you probably know that in addition to her entrepreneurial duties, Nicole is a mother of two, which means she has to combine her personal style with a certain level of comfort. Does this deter her? Not a bit! In fact, whether she’s working a fur vest in winter or keeping it easy and breezy in a bohemian smock in summer, one thing is certain: Nicole is always super-chic! On that note, we present our latest edition of Seasonal Style.
In September, Nicole arrived in New York City for a series of book signings for her latest book, Priceless. What does a best-selling and most-fashionable author wear? A luxe velvet blazer, ripped jeans, studded boots, a felt fedora, and a skull-print scarf—in other words, a flawless mix of hippie and rocker chic. We think this ensemble is just perfect for fall. Not only are the velvet jacket and scarf both great layering pieces, but velvet is a major fall trend. What more could you ask for? To take on Nicole’s fall style, start with her exact jacket—Winter Kate’s Ebony Jacket ($395)—or try Urban Renewal’s Curatorial Burnout Velvet Blazer ($68). Then, layer your jacket over a pair of Banana Republic’s Heritage Destroyed Slouchy Skinny Jeans ($120). Finish your outfit off with a slew of accessories: Bop Basics’s Floppy Fedora ($78), Topshop’s Skull Printed Scarf ($48) and KORS Michael Kors’ Nora Boots ($210).
Nicole calls Los Angeles—a relatively sunny city—home, which means her winter ensembles usually consist of lighter pieces. Case in point: last December, Nicole was spotted doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in LA. Her outfit for the day? A fur-trimmed vest layered over a lightweight henley sweater, inky-blue jeans, and leather thigh-high boots. The main difference between fall and winter? Overall, Nicole just opts for heavier versions of her fall essentials. To put together a similarly stylish ensemble, layer Splendid’s Very Light Jersey Henley ($58) under a fur vest; we like Rebecca Taylor’s Fab Faux Fur Vest ($395) and BB Dakota’s Ashland Faux Fur Vest ($84). Next, grab a pair of Topshop’s Vintage Skinny Baxter Jeans ($80). To finish, loosely tuck your jeans into a pair of leather thigh-high boots such as Sam Edelman’s Sutton Over the Knee Boots ($300) or Jessica Simpson’s Over-The-Knee Riding Boots ($160).
In March, Nicole was spotted out and about in Los Angeles with her adorable daughter, Harlow. Her outfit for the day? Simple but stylish: an ethnic-print tunic top, skinny jeans, and leather moccasin booties. We love Nicole’s ensemble for many reasons: not only does it stay true to her modern boho vibe, but it is also easy and effortless, which is perfect for the on-the-go mom. To do as Nicole does and step into spring in style, layer a bohemian-style tunic such as Tolani Collection’s Ophellia Tunic ($98) or Forever 21’s Printed Chiffon Kaftan Top ($15.80) over a pair of Cheap Monday’s Zip Low Jeans ($65). Finish off your outfit with a pair of moccasin booties; you can choose a pair designed by Nicole herself, such as House of Harlow 1960’s Malorie Moccasins ($168) or Maddie Moccasins ($225), or try a pair of Free People’s Two Button Bootie Moccasins ($48).
By August this year, the weather in Los Angeles was balmy, summer had arrived, and Nicole was spotted out and about in Beverly Hills in a decidedly bohemian-chic ensemble—namely, a breezy ethnic-print sundress, gladiator-style sandals, a Chanel bag, aviator sunglasses, and her favorite felt fedora. All in all, an unfussy outfit for simple summer days. To give Nicole’s summer style a spin, start with a printed sundress; we like Tolani’s Anna Tunic ($99), Antik Batik’s Kim Mini Dress ($438) and Tolani’s Alexandria Tunic ($129). Next, look for a pair of leather gladiator-inspired sandals such as Kenneth Cole Reaction’s Sparkling Gems Flat Gladiator Sandals ($44.08 – $79.95) or Steve Madden’s Banglez Sandals ($89.95). To finish your ensemble, throw on a pair of aviator sunglasses—we like the classic Ray-Ban Aviator Sunglasses ($139)—and then sling Ann Taylor’s Quilted Leather Townhouse Bag ($198) over your shoulder.
