Space-Saving Ideas for Compact Kitchens

Whether you live in a Manhattan apartment or share your space with a roommate, most of us often dream of a large kitchen to cook in.

Often wonder if there was a way to suite your space better? The compact kitchen has a range of innovative appliances and gadgets that are well-suited to smaller kitchens. If you don’t have the luxury to make structural changes, check out Betta Living ‘s products, tips and tricks.

The important first step

Before going on a spending spree to solve your compact kitchen problems, it may be worth having a walk around your kitchen and jotting down some details. Focus on how you use it currently and how you’d like to be able to use it in ways you currently can’t.

It’s important to understand what works and what doesn’t before you go ahead and start redesigning the space. You’ll need to think about what kind of storage you want and how much workspace you need on the counters.

Choosing the right appliances

Compact kitchen appliances are quite popular now, so there is a wide variety of price ranges to choose from. You could get a freestanding cooker that’s as little as 50cm wide, and you can also get hold of compact ovens, microwaves and coffee machines.

Even dishwashers are available in compact sizes these days – some of them are even designed to fit on your work surfaces. If you’re really pushed for space however, consider going for an under-counter fridge for the kitchen, with a larger freezer to be kept separately – perhaps in the garage or cellar, if you have one.

Storage is key

When putting together plans for a compact kitchen, storage space is of paramount importance. This is where you’re going to save most space, so it’s vital that you’ve thought about your storage solutions carefully.

The key thing is to avoid storage units, as they will make the kitchen feel cramped. Go for clever storage solutions instead. Get a few magic corners for the cupboards and try and install some open shelving too. If there’s room and the ceiling is quite high, you may want to consider installing some hooks, so you can hang your cooking gear up, too.

So before you think about ordering in dinner again, think about the small changes that could make a big difference in your space.
