Street Chic: May 2010

Whenever we are in the midst of a fashion fix, there is one source of inspiration that never disappoints: the street.

Whenever we are in the midst of a fashion fix, there is one source of inspiration that never disappoints: the street. With most of the world in a seasonal limbo – not quite summer, not quite winter – it is a great time to revamp your style by way of some fresh fashion inspiration from the sidewalks of the world, whether it is the effortless ensembles of Aussie girls or the streetwise styles of seasoned New Yorkers.

As always, we’re seeing a fashionable fusion of styles on the streets this month, from the modern boho vibe of Muse #6 to the laidback-luxe of Muse #2. If you are looking to give your closet a major overhaul, or you just want to pick up a few fresh ideas, pick a May muse and get inspired with this month’s edition of Street Chic.

#1. For spring we just can’t seem to get enough of smart shorts, which is why we love this chic ensemble spotted by Vanessa Jackman during Australian Fashion Week. While the super-short length is easily offset by the billowy fabric, our modish muse cleverly compensates with added fabric on top: namely, a loose long-sleeve sweater. For a similarly chic outfit, we recommend J Crew’s Déjeuner Silk Shorts ($88) and See by Chloe’s Scallop Tie Waist Shorts ($295), with balance from Sparkle & Fade’s Rollcuff Boatneck Sweater ($48). Some fabulous footwear finishes the look; try Steve Madden’s Alice Cork & Wood Platform ($206.25).

#2. There is something to be said about a girl who can incorporate a major spring trend into her outfit – in this case, underwear as outerwear – and make it look effortless at the same time. This sassy Australian lady jazzed up an otherwise laidback ensemble with a hint of lace underwear and a pair of Alexander Wang’s sought-after Alla Leopard-Print Wedge Mules ($768). Take a page from her style book by grabbing these Skinny Leg Military Pants ($148) by Joe’s Jeans and pairing them with Bassike’s Organic Long Line Slouch Tank ($43.96) and Eberjey’s India Lace Retro Bralet ($55). For a budget-friendly version of Wang’s wedges, try All Black’s Leopard Wedge ($178).

#3. While denim shorts and casual flats are wardrobe basics, they instantly come to life with great accessories; to be precise, a vintage-inspired headband, leather satchel bag and cool pair of dark sunglasses gives this outfit some fashionable flair. The fundamental elements of this ensemble – white tee, denim cut-offs and draped cardigan – can be found in Forever21’s Frayed Cut-Off Shorts ($17.80) and American Apparel’s Baby Rib Basic Short Sleeve T ($15) and Solid Rib Oversized Pocket Cardigan ($42). To recreate the spirit of this look, Jennifer Ouellette’s Liberty Print Headband ($65), Treesje’s Turner Satchel ($595) and these Printed Dotties Slip-On Shoes ($18) from Urban Outfitters.

#4. We love how this stylish New Yorker blends her mismatched prints with a pair of chunky boots to create an outfit that is, in one word, cool. While a floral dress is a great way to step into spring, it is overtly feminine; however, adding a tomboy-ish touch, such as a plaid shirt and lace-up boots, will quickly eliminate the girly aspect. To pull off a similar look, look for a floral dress like Wal G’s Floral Print Dress ($70) and then opt for a plaid shirt with a similar color palette; we like The Shirt ($118) by Joe’s Jeans. Asos Anglo’s Leather Ski Hook Boots ($109.91) round out the ensemble.

#5. The much-loved nautical look was revived this spring with a heavy dose of bold stripes, gold buttons and navy blue hues hitting the streets. This style-savvy New Yorker gave the nautical trend a contemporary twist by adding peep-toe wedge boots and long, loose hair; all in all, a look that is effortless and edgy. To emulate her outfit, start out with Asos’s Stripe Bodycon Dress ($43.96) or Emma Watson For People Tree’s Organic Stripe Dress ($59.18). While these options will add a bold print to your look, a cropped jacket meshes perfectly with the nautical vibe; two ideal options are ABS’s Black Bandleader Jacket ($85.25) and Current/Elliott’s Majorette Jacket ($284). A pair of Madison Harding’s Rockaway Perforated Wedge Booties ($295) finishes the look.

#6. This month’s final Street Chic pick is a lesson in the art of summer style. The white eyelet lace dress is an absolute must-have in your summer closet and can easily be dressed up or down, as you need it. While the bohemian-luxe style of this dress would work well with a pair of simple ethnic sandals, we love how our chic muse has opted for a classic look, pairing it with Chloe ankle boots and a timeless black Chanel shoulder bag. For a similar ensemble, we like Gold Hawk’s Floral Eyelet Dress ($257) and AKA New York’s Sicily Dress ($298) combined with D-Co Copenhagen’s Leather Cuff Boots ($118.36) and Simply Vera Vera Wang’s Nicky Tote ($69).
