Street Chic: NYFW, Fall 2012

The runway shows can be frustrating for those of us who want instant outfit gratification—after all, who wants to see a parade of amazing fall looks when we have barely started planning for spring?—but there is always one thing that brings us back down to earth: the street style that is on display outside the shows! Yes, the looks on the streets allow us to live in the moment and receive instantaneous outfit ideas, so we have rounded up four of our favorite looks from New York Fashion Week so you can get inspired… now! On that note, click through to today’s special edition Street Chic story for all the ideas and inspiration you can handle.

1. It is no secret that floral pants are having a major moment now, so we were thrilled to see how fashion blogger Elin Kling put her fresh spin on them for a day at the shows. Elin deftly balanced the feminine vibe of the pants by pairing them with smart, sophisticated pieces—a boyfriend blazer, a slouchy tie-dye tee, and chic black pumps. The result? An ultra-cool yet unfussy look that is perfect for running from show to show. To try this look for yourself, pick up Topshop’s Boyfriend Blazer ($130) and Raquel Allegra’s Oversize T-Shirt ($235) and pair them with either 7 For All Mankind’s Skinny Leggings ($189) or Citizens of Humanity’s Mandy Jeans ($189). Then, simply add Aldo’s Fravel Pumps ($90).

2. There is no better time of year than fashion week to experiment with accessories, which is just one of the reasons we love the fashion week outfit worn by our second muse above. By picking out a few smart-yet-simple pieces and then accessorizing with statement accessories—specifically, a charm necklace, python-print heels, and a cool tie belt—our muse has instantly created an eye-catching outfit that will last all day long. To make this look your own, pick up Madewell’s Perfect Ex-Boyfriend Shirt ($60) and Zara’s Studio Trousers ($90). Then, look for accessories that stand out on their own—for example, we like Dannijo’s Paola Fringe Necklace ($326), Joan & David’s Quella Pumps ($200), and Caractere’s Tie Belt ($85).

3. Leave it to Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls to put together the perfect “off-duty model” look for fall 2012 fashion week. By mixing cozy and comfortable pieces like her grey track pants and slouchy blue sweater with high-end fashion pieces like her black bomber jacket and studded See by Chloe boots, Joan has created an effortlessly chic and understated look that is perfect for those off-duty hours between shows. To try this look yourself, layer ASOS’s Soft Leather Bomber Jacket ($224) over Nightcap Clothing’s Mesh Lace Sweatshirt ($176), before slipping into Étoile Isabel Marant’s Cotton-Jersey Track Pants ($355). Then, add a pair of biker-chic boots like Ash’s Stud-Detail Boots ($318) or Jeffrey Campbell’s Buckle Back Ankle Boots ($248) and you’re all set.

4. The rush of fashion week definitely calls for outfits that are comprised of just a few easy pieces, so we love the outfit worn by our fourth muse above. To keep warm in the chilly New York weather, she paired a chunky knit sweater with black jeans and tall suede boots. Then, she elevated her outfit from cozy to chic by adding a fur circle scarf, a statement bag, and dark sunglasses—all must-have accessories for a fashion insider. To make this look your own, start with Kimberly Ovitz’s Lambert Sweater ($470) and your favorite black jeans. Then, look for a pair of boots like Rachel Zoe’s Brigitte Knee-High Boots ($695) before picking up a fuzzy scarf like ASOS’s Faux Fur Snood ($32).
