Style Essentials: Fall 2011

Fall is just around the corner, and honestly, I couldn’t be more excited. Don’t get me wrong, dear readers. I love summer just as much as the next girl, but there is something about the clothes of fall—chunky knit sweaters, oversized fur coats, and ankle boots—that makes my heart go pitter-patter. Of course, there is always a budget to contend with, which is why I make sure to stick to a simple shopping strategy when it comes time to tackle my wishlist. That strategy? Pick out a few on-trend pieces, but make sure to also look out for timeless pieces that I will wear year after year. On that note, read on to discover the eight essentials I will be shopping for this fall.

My first point of order, every fall, is to pick up a new coat that will see me through the season in style. This year, inspired by the outerwear I spotted on the Pucci and Gucci runways, I am particularly coveting faux fur coats in rich colors like eggplant, deep red and teal green. Next, I plan to pick up a party dress—or two!—for the holiday season. Of course, like most modern girls, I look for dresses that can be worn on a variety of occasions, which means no sequins or embellishments for me. Instead, I look for flattering silhouettes and interesting prints. Of course, I always keep an eagle-eye on the runways for key trends, which is why I am currently craving a pair of printed pants, as seen on the Tibi runway, as well as a knit Southwestern-inspired sweater, variations of which were seen at both Proenza Schouler and Isabel Marant. Before I purchase any on-trend pieces, however, I always ensure I can mix-and-match them with at least two pieces already in my closet. This safeguards me from that old habit of having a closet full of clothes, many of which still have tags!

When it comes to fall accessories, I always look for a great pair of boots, usually with an interesting twist. This fall, thanks to Isabel Marant, I am looking forward to picking up a pair of fringe-embellished boots. They have a bohemian vibe, but they also feel really modern. In addition, I have been craving a felt hat in a plush color like plum. (Clearly, my color palette this season will be a mix of purples and reds!) While a felt hat is on trend right now, it is a piece that I can see myself wearing time and time again. Speaking of which, I plan to pick up two accessories that are more investment than in vogue: a gold cuff and a leopard-print handbag. Yes, these pieces are definitely having a major moment right now, but leopard-print lasts forever, and a gold cuff never goes out of style! On that note, I am thrilled to share my fall Style Essentials with you, and I’d love to discover what you are coveting in the comments section below! Happy shopping! –Bryna, Editor in Chief.
