Style Essentials: Summer 2011

Unless you have a bottomless budget, it can be tricky deciding which pieces you will invest in each season and which pieces will be categorized under the “maybe one day” section on your shopping list. This summer, I plan to stay true to my seasonal strategy: I will pick out a few on-trend pieces, I will refresh the basics in my closet, and I will select a few key accessories that are sure to make a statement. Easier said than done, I know, but it is a tactic that seems to work. On that note, read on to discover the eight essentials I will be shopping for this summer!

When it comes to summer, I always keep one thing in mind when creating my shopping list: ease. You see, I don’t want to be bothered with fussy details and finicky silhouettes; I want to be able to slip in and out of my favorite pieces without any effort. Happily, two of the trends I am truly excited about this season—little white dresses and pleated skirts—fall into line with this philosophy. Accordingly, I’ll be picking up a white lace dress—inspired by Dolce & Gabbana’s spring 2011 collection, naturally—and a pleated maxi skirt pronto! Another trend that caught my eye this season? The 1970s! While there are many ways to channel this trend, I’ll be keeping it simple by picking up a floppy boho hat that I can wear with wide-leg jeans or a sun dress.

Next, I want to refresh my summer basics. This means swapping out last year’s bikini for a crochet bikini—not only will this give my closet a hippie-luxe element, but I love the interesting texture. In addition, I plan to pick out a boho cover-up for lazy days by the pool. Finally, I am updating my shoe closet with a pair of beaded sandals—again, I love the texture, but I also love the muted tangerine hue.

Finally, I am filling out my shopping list with two must-have accessories: a pair of statement sunglasses and a printed hobo bag. The sunglasses are sure to elevate anything I wear this summer from simple to stylish. As for the bag, I love how versatile it is—I will carry it to the flea market, to the beach, and while running errands. After all, the most important thing to remember—for me—is to buy pieces you will wear time and time again! On that note, I am thrilled to share my summer Style Essentials with you, and I’d love to discover what you are coveting in the comments section below! Happy shopping! –Bryna, Editor in Chief.
