As busy girls-on-the-go, you know the benefits of an outfit that lasts all day and into the night, and as such, we’re sure a little day-to-night outfit inspiration would never go astray. Luckily, that is just what we have in store for you in today’s special edition Style Ideas story! We have looked to four top tastemakers—specifically, Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Stone, Malin Akerman, and Michelle Williams—for inspiration and come up with a full list of tips, tricks, and ideas. So, what are you waiting for? Click inside to discover what these stars are wearing and how you can make these day-to-night looks your own.
Who is our inspiration?
April has seen a slew of stars in perfect day-to-night ensembles. For instance, Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted in New York City wearing a grey Burberry sheath dress and a pair of Sergio Rossi heels. Emma Stone posed at a photo call for The Amazing Spider Man in Cancun, Mexico, wearing a cream top and skirt, both by Dolce & Gabbana, and strappy Brian Atwood heels. Malin Akerman attended an event for The Giant Mechanical Man in New York City wearing a leather-trimmed top and trousers, both by J Mendel, and Walter Steiger heels. Last, but certainly not least, Michelle Williams was spotted out in Brooklyn wearing a printed dress, a boyfriend blazer, and smart Oxford shoes.
How do they style their looks?
As you can see, these four looks represent different levels of formality. For instance, Gwyneth’s outfit is perfect for those who work in a bustling office environment and need something that can be taken straight from a boardroom meeting to a business dinner. By styling her outfit with just a smart satchel and nothing else, Gwyneth ensures she will turn heads for all the right reasons. Emma’s look is perfect for a more casual office environment. It is still formal enough for, say, a client meeting, but the colorful heels give the outfit a personal twist and are great if you are heading out for after-work cocktails. Malin’s outfit is perfect for just about anything—it is sophisticated enough for a high-end office, sleek enough for a casual office, and stylish enough for anything in between. In fact, all that is necessary to take this outfit from day to night is to add a pair of earrings and a colorful clutch. As for Michelle, this outfit is great if you are lucky enough to be self-employed or you are a student. To take this outfit from day to night, we would simply swap the shoes for a pair of pumps and head out the door.
How can I make these looks my own?
Rather than simply imitate these looks, we suggest you borrow elements from each of these four ladies and create your own ready-to-go day-to-night wardrobe. Start by picking up a great dress in a neutral color—we like The Work Dress ($180) by Bop Basics—and a more casual dress like ASOS’s Skater Dress ($40). Then, add a couple of sleek separates to your collection. We suggest grabbing a smart top like Pim + Larkin’s Eyelet Peplum Top ($59), a pair of tailored trousers like Reiss’s Reina Tailored Cigarette Pants ($210), an easy-to-wear skirt like Zara’s Jacquard Skirt ($60), and a blazer like Topshop’s Boyfriend Blazer ($130). As for accessories, a smart satchel such as J Crew’s Edie Purse ($238) (pick a color to match your personality!) and a pair of simple pumps like Sam Edelman’s Portney Pumps ($67) will start you off on the right foot! Happy shopping!
