Style Ideas: Music Festivals

It is no big secret that for many of us, a music festival is not just about the music: it is also a way to shine the spotlight on our sense of personal style. With that said, Coachella kicks off in California later this month, so we can’t think of a better time to round up some fresh music festival outfit ideas—with a little help from Kate Bosworth, Camilla Belle, Teresa Palmer, and Diane Kruger, naturally. On that note, click through to today’s special edition Style Ideas story for plenty of outfit inspiration and make sure you take notes!

What should I wear?
Ah, the age-old question! One of the first things you should keep in mind is that a music festival is an all-day and sometimes all-night event, so you want to keep comfortable. With that said, let’s take a look at what our four muses each wore to last year’s Coachella festival in California. Kate Bosworth opted for a cool yet casual get-up: a sleeveless graphic-print Topshop tee, white denim Current/Elliott cut-offs, and Isabel Marant wedge sneakers. Camilla Belle layered a beaded Ralph Lauren Collection vest over a lace Joie top, and then added denim Current/Elliott cut-offs and Juicy Couture sandals. Both these outfits have a relaxed and easy vibe, but they also feature individual twists that allow both Kate and Camilla’s personalities to shine through. Teresa Palmer opted for a printed sun dress and sandals—an outfit that is perfect for a day in the sun. As for Diane Kruger, she chose a figure-flattering striped tank dress and lace-up Joie sandals—a fashion-forward and uncomplicated outfit. As you can see, there is a common theme among all four outfits and that is that all the pieces are decidedly unfussy.

How should I style my outfit?
Now that you have a few ideas about what sort of pieces you should be looking for, it is time to get down to fun part: the business of styling your outfit. This is where you can really show off your style and let your personality come out to play, which is what all four of our muses have done. For instance, Kate piled on layers of colorful bracelets, giving her outfit a cool Californian-girl vibe. Camilla opted for a pair of oversized sunglasses and a delicate gold necklace, showing off her more classic side. Teresa picked out a hat that added a boho touch to her look and sheltered her from the sun like a true Australian girl. Meanwhile, Diane remained faithful to her minimalist vibe, wearing just a simple pair of earrings and allowing her dress and sandals to take center stage.

How do I try these ideas for myself?
If you are leaning towards Kate and Camilla’s top-and-shorts combinations, start by picking up a pair of Current/Elliott’s The Boyfriend Shorts ($190). Then, either mimic Kate’s cool combo by pairing your shorts with Wildfox Couture’s Alamo Dylan Tee ($64), or tackle Camilla’s boho style by pairing your shorts with Edun’s Beaded Silk-Chiffon Vest ($340) and Free People’s Eyelet Paper Hearts Crop Top ($62). If, on the other hand, you are leaning towards a dress, you can take on Teresa’s style with Sabine’s Mixed Print Dress ($79) or BB Dakota’s Jacinda Print Tank Dress ($85) or you can make Diane’s look your own with ASOS’s Stripe Tank Dress ($32) or Soft Joie’s Bond Tank Dress ($128). As for accessories, we think these three pieces are must-haves: Dolce Vita’s Cybele Gladiator Sandals ($169), Eugenia Kim’s Honey Sunhat ($285), and House of Harlow 1960’s Chantel Sunglasses ($125).
