Style Spy: Airport Chic

When it comes to air travel, we know that comfort will always triumph over style. After all, it doesn’t matter how fabulous you look if you’re squashed into an economy seat, right? Not quite. As our six stylish celebrity muses prove, you don’t need to sacrifice your fashion sensibilities for the sake of comfort. These ladies should know; as frequent jetsetters, they’re more than equipped to school us in the art of airport chic.

A quick glimpse at our chosen fashionistas reveals a few key trends for flying: dark sunglasses, oversized leather bags (for all your favorite fashion magazines), and a soft scarf (for added warmth!). With these key elements in mind, we’re ready for an in-depth look at airport chic with Victoria, Rihanna and the rest. Read on!

Victoria Beckham: For those in the know, Victoria’s take on airport chic isn’t a surprise. While she has certainly toned down her time-honored sense of sophistication, she still errs on the chic side with a classic black blazer and round-toe pumps. Remove these two elements, however, and you will find a suitably snug outfit. For a similar look, we suggest checking out J Crew’s Silky Linen Slouch Pant ($69.50) and Topshop’s Ruch 3/4 Sleeve Blazer ($125). Combine them with a loose tank, like Rag & Bone/JEAN’s The Tank ($70), then finish off your look with a pair of Nine West’s Ambitious Pumps ($69).

Jennifer Aniston: While Jennifer is often lauded for her red carpet style, her flair for off-duty fashion shouldn’t be missed. For a recent transatlantic trip, Jennifer got cozy in a slouchy striped tee, boyfriend jeans, laceless sneakers and a chic leather biker jacket. A cashmere scarf was kept close at hand for a small dose of luxury. If you like this look, don’t miss Alternative Apparel’s Wide Stripe Boyfriend Tee ($52) or BDG’s Slim Boyfriend Jean ($58). Then, just add Victoria’s Secret’s Ruffle-Trim Tiered Leather Jacket ($218) and this Wrap Scarf ($88) by Love Quotes.

Rihanna: Although Rihanna is known for her edgy fashion sense, she clearly recognizes the need for moderation when flying. We love her oversized, printed cardigan (perfect for a mid-flight siesta) and slouchy beanie combo. To recreate this look, mix Twelfth St. By Cynthia Vincent’s Oversized Lightweight Navajo Sweater ($245) with FP’s Seamed Super Stretch Jean ($68). Finish off your look with Colin Stuart’s Low Fringe Booties ($85) and this Cotton Chainlink Slouchy Beanie ($12.99) from Urban Outfitters.

Miranda Kerr: While most of our lovely ladies love to bundle up in worn-in denim, Miranda Kerr heads straight to her personal wardrobe staple: the maxi dress. With a cropped leather jacket over the top, this look is cool yet casual and allows for plenty of movement, a necessity on a long flight. If you’re ready to try this look, grab Topshop Boutique’s T-Shirt Maxi Dress ($125) and layer it underneath this 3/4 Cropped Leather Biker Jacket ($169.09) from Asos. Keep your footwear simple with Gap’s Leather Ballet Flat ($29.99).

Kate Bosworth: Over the past few years, Kate has risen up the style ladder to become a perennial fashion favorite. For a short haul 2009 flight, Kate mixed her Californian cool with on-trend elements for a look that was stylishly straightforward: leather skirt, denim vest, colorful scarf and patent ankle boots. For a similar style, try Genetic Denim’s Rocky Denim Vest ($176) with For Joseph’s Calibri Leather Skirt ($196). Once your outfit is set, add a pair of boots, like Rebecca Taylor’s Leopardo Ankle Bootie ($211.00 – $239.25) and then wrap a scarf around your neck. We like Rachel Rachel Roy’s Spring Garden Scarf ($38).

Kate Moss: For our final dose of inspiration, we’re heading all the way back to 2003, when Kate Moss glided through Heathrow in a fur vest, ballet flats, a printed scarf and a pair of oversized sunglasses (perfect for hiding tired eyes!). To take a page out of Kate’s book – which, let’s face it, we all want to – start with The Battalion’s Munro Veggie Fur Vest ($250) and Lucky Brand’s Southport Zoe Skinny Jeans ($49.99). Your outfit won’t be complete without Forever21’s Tribal Striped Scarf ($7.80) and Ray-Ban’s Outsiders Oversized Wayfarer Sunglasses ($145).
