Style Spy: Bright Red

Thanks to stylish stars such as Karen Elson and Emma Stone, not to mention notable labels like Diane von Furstenberg and Marchesa, one color is standing out above the rest right now: bright red. That is the good news. The even better news is that though bright red might feel like a tricky color to pull off, it doesn’t have to be! We have devoted today’s Style Spy story to exploring how four top tastemakers—namely, Molly Sims, Karen Elson, Naomi Watts, and Emma Stone—wear this bold color and what they wear it with! Ready? Read on for all the need-to-know details!

Molly Sims
There are many ways to wear bright red, but if you want to start out gradually, why not take notes from Molly Sims? Last month, Molly attended the Rise of the Planet of the Apes premiere in Los Angeles wearing a bright red jacket over a neutral minidress. We love the way Molly easily tempered the boldness of her jacket by pairing it with a neutral nude dress. The ensemble still catches the eye, but you don’t need to be brimming with confidence to wear this ensemble. To make this look your own, make sure you check out Miu Miu’s Cropped Blazer ($455) and Dress Monster’s Blazer ($209). A dress like Wilt’s Sash Tank Dress ($102.20) will complete the look.

Karen Elson
If you do have plenty of confidence, why not wear red from head to toe, which is what Karen Elson did for the Tonight We Tanqueray party in New York City last month? Yes, her red Gucci dress is bold, but you can pull off this look just as easily as Karen has by keeping two key points in mind: keep your accessories to a minimum and opt for an understated beauty look. By following these guidelines, you will allow your bright red ensemble to speak for itself. Inspired? Be sure to check out these options: Gucci’s Silk-Chiffon Dress ($2,695), Loveappella’s Open Shoulder Maxi Dress ($47.99), and Pixie Market’s Lace Maxi Dress ($111).

Naomi Watts
If you like to experiment with color combinations, bright red is ultra-chic when worn with black and white. For proof, take a look at the ensemble Naomi Watts put together for Stella McCartney’s resort presentation, which took place in New York City back in June. Now, while Naomi’s white eyelet tank and cropped black blazer are chic, certainly, it is her red shorts that really bring her summery ensemble to life. On that note, you can try this look for yourself by picking up Nasty Gal’s Lily Crochet Top ($48) and Wyatt’s Drape Front Cropped Blazer ($88) and pairing them with Fornarina’s Shorts ($30) or Sparkle & Fade’s High-Rise Knit Shorts ($38).

Emma Stone
As modern girls-on-the-go, you may want to incorporate bright red into your everyday wardrobe, which is why we love the outfit Emma Stone put together for her appearance on The Today Show last month. Her ensemble—a red sheath dress and peach pumps—has plenty of verve, but it is also smart and sophisticated. Accordingly, you could easily transition a similar look from the office to cocktail hour. So, if you want to create an equally chic look, make sure you check out Cynthia Steffe’s Seamed Ponte Knit Sheath Dress ($275) and Calvin Klein’s Zip Pocket Shift Dress ($49.97). A pair of Miss KG’s Court Shoes ($137.91) will add a little spice.
