Style Spy: Fall 2010

Whether you’re wandering the streets of New York City, browsing the shops in Los Angeles, or heading out and about somewhere in between, one thing is certain: fall weather has arrived. Accordingly, you’re probably in need of some fresh outfit inspiration! Happily, for our latest Style Spy story, we’ve rounded up eight fall ensembles from some of our favorite style stars to present to you, dear readers! From Lou Doillon’s Parisian-chic aesthetic to Olivia Palermo’s cool city vibe, we’re sure you’ll find something to inspire you in today’s story!

Jessica Alba
Spotted out for a walk in Inglewood, California, last month, actress Jessica Alba looked particularly chic in an all-black ensemble. We love the way her oversized sweater is balanced out with the addition of skinny jeans. Additionally, we adore her slouchy knit beanie—it’s the perfect way to top off a simple-yet-stylish fall outfit. If you love this look, try pairing DKNY’s Oversized Sweater ($145) with Free People’s Super Skinny Five Pocket Jeans ($68). Finish with Ash’s Reverso Biker Boots ($265) and Wooden Ships’s Crosshatch Slouchy Beanie ($20).

Alexa Chung
Fall doesn’t mean relegating your spring/summer pieces to the back of your closet, as evidenced by Alexa Chung. In fact, at the 54th BFI London Film Festival last month, Alex got some extra mileage out of her leather shorts by layering them over opaque tights and pairing them with a knit sweater and chunky heels. Ready to try this for yourself? Layer Gap’s Cable Knit Sweater ($59.50) over Blank Denim’s Leather Shorts ($98). Then, add opaque tights and a pair of Jeffrey Campbell’s Lita Platforms ($175).

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley instantly caught our eye with this unfussy ensemble which she wore while out shopping in New York City last month. We love the way she has mixed and matched a selection of uncomplicated pieces to come up with the perfect off-duty uniform for a modish model. If you’re ready to try this look, pair Victoria’s Secret’s Motorcycle Jacket ($98) and Madewell’s Striped Mohair Sweater ($75) with Gap’s Forever Skinny Jeans ($59.50). Then, simply add Ash’s Iman Cuff Suede Booties ($250) and Forever 21’s Faux Fur Scarf ($10.80).

Lou Doillon
If Lou Doillon is known for one thing, it’s giving every outfit her own personal twist. For example, last month, Lou was spotted at Vanessa Bruno’s spring show, wearing an ensemble with plenty of panache: a shearling-trimmed coat, dressy shorts, knee-high socks, and strappy pumps. It is part Parisian chic, part rocker, completely cool. Want to work a similar look? Start with Juicy Couture’s Tweed Jacket ($400) and Loeffler Randall’s Combo Shorts ($395). Finish with a pair of Diane von Furstenberg’s Zia Pumps ($280) and American Apparel’s Cable Knit Socks ($13).

Olivia Palermo
Thanks to an ever-expanding catalog of on-point outfits, Olivia Palermo has another title to add to her resume: rapidly rising style star. We love her latest fall ensemble, which she wore out to lunch in the West Village recently. The look is chic but it still has a casual element, which makes it great for the girl-on-the-go. To take a page out of Olivia’s book, pair Michael Michael Kors’ Mongolian Fur Vest ($325) with Vero Moda’s Very Skinny Jeans ($137.92). Finish with Aldo’s Cicerelli Flats ($39.98-$50) and Latico’s Eelskin Interior Framed Clutch ($119).

Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst consistently puts together outfits that are as simple as they are stylish. As a result, she has an effortless vibe about her that feels totally accessible. Last month, Kirsten was spotted out shopping in Sherman Oaks, California. Her outfit—button-down shirt, skinny jeans, and lace-up booties—is smart and understated, a great combination. For an equally chic look, layer Gap’s Single-Pocket Boyfriend Shirt ($19.99) under Gap’s Cashmere Cardigan ($98), and then add 7 For All Mankind’s The Skinny Jeans ($149). Finish with BC Footwear’s Save It For Later Boots ($90.95).

Kate Bosworth
Leave it to Kate Bosworth to put together yet another perfect concert outfit! Last month, the perennial style-setter was spotted at a Broken Bells concert in Los Angeles, wearing a slouchy cashmere sweater, skinny jeans, and Isabel Marant cowgirl boots. The result is an easy, effortless, and super-accessible ensemble. For a similarly modish outfit, try pairing J Crew’s Cashmere Slouchy Sweater ($168) with Free People’s Seamed Skinny Jeans ($78). Finish with a pair of Joie’s Morrison Suede Ankle Boots ($295) or Rag & Bone’s Harrow Suede Booties ($450).

Sienna Miller
Lastly, we turn to actress Sienna Miller, who was spotted in Dinard, France, last month, wearing a casually chic outfit: navy blue anorak, jeans, leather boots, all topped off with an on-trend leopard-print bag. All in all, Sienna’s look is uncomplicated, which makes it perfect for a crisp fall day. Ready to attempt Sienna’s look? Start with Kimchi Blue’s Femme Nylon Parka ($19.99). Then, throw on jeans, a simple tee, and Nine West’s Trurman Knee-High Boots ($178.95). Finish with Kate Spade New York’s Maryanne Faux Fur Shopper ($445).
