As we sail into 2010, a trend that has long been in the fashion spotlight is once again being spied on the horizon: the nautical stripe. Always a chic and classic print to incorporate into your closet, the look has been seen on many stars lately, including Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung.
Like many trends, Coco Chanel was one of the first to experiment with the look and, naturally, the stylish picked up on her vibe. These days, the nautical stripe is not so much a trend as a style staple – meaning that it is an absolute must-have for your wardrobe.
The nautical stripe looks best when white is paired with navy, black or red tones. Although the colors may be neutral, the print is anything but and is sure to make you stand out. Whether you try a slouchy top like Sienna Miller (far left) or you opt for a mini dress a la Kristin Cavallari (far right), the nautical stripe is sure to give you a breezy confidence that will take you all the way through to summer.
Both Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung incorporated the look with striped tops. Sienna mixed a Chanel top with a pair of cropped jeans and suede ankle booties. The Limited’s Parallel Lines Bateau Top ($44.50) has a similar, chic feel and would look great paired with the Arnelle Bootie ($136.80) by Guess by Marciano.
Meanwhile, Alexa Chung (second from left), who has tried nautical stripes on many an occasion, opted to pair her top with a navy jumper and a pair of beachy espadrilles. Topshop’s Stripe Gold Button Cardi ($50) is a budget-friendly option that is perfect for a layered look.
While Sienna and Alexa went for tops, both Olivia Palermo (second from right) and Kristin Cavallari went for dresses. This Killian Boatneck Tunic ($108) by Ralph Lauren Rugby is the ideal choice for a girl who loves to show off her legs. Another perfect option is the Sonia Low Back Mini Dress ($143) by Torn by Ronny Kobo. If you prefer a skirt, try this Nautical Wrapped Skirt ($231) by See by Chloe.
For those that can’t wait for summer to try the look, there are plenty of outerwear options that incorporate this style. Free People’s We The Free Nautical Blazer ($89.95) is a colorful option while this Striped French Terry Boyfriend Blazer ($58) by Mirror/Dash is undeniably chic.
