Style Tips: Ankle Boots

Lately we have been trying to think a few steps ahead, knowing that spring is just around the corner. The in-between months – spring and fall – are perfect for trying out all the lightweight pieces that just don’t work in summer and winter. The in-between piece we’ve been craving lately? A great pair of ankle boots. Of course, we wanted to get a few style tips from our favorite celebrity muses to show us the way. With that, we present our March edition of Style Tips.

STYLE TIP #1 / Wear slouchy, flat ankle boots and a chunky sweater for a casual-yet-cool look: As always, Vanessa Hudgens keeps things young and fresh, pairing an oversized, chunky knit sweater with a pair of simple jeans and slouchy ankle boots. The result? A perfect, off-duty look that tries just hard enough. For a similar look, combine Vince’s Slouchy Sweater ($245) with Rag & Bone’s The Skinny Jeans ($185). A pair of Antic’s Brogue Zip Ankle Boots ($135) will complete the look.

STYLE TIP #2 / Keep your outfit chic and refined by pairing a printed shift dress with lace up booties: Leave it to Olivia Palermo to keep things polished and ultra-classic, pairing a printed shift dress with a pair of lace up ankle booties. The look is sophisticated and chic all at once and is perfect for the girl around town. We suggest grabbing this Beaded Neck Ponte Shift Dress ($97.90) by Laundry B Shelli Segal and then adding Paul & Joe Sister’s Vanda Suede Fringe Booties ($181.50).

STYLE TIP #3 / Add a rock & roll element to your look by pairing lace up booties with a leather jacket: If one thing is certain about Gwyneth Paltrow, it is that she has mastered the art of comfort dressing without losing her sense of style. To fashion your ankle boots a la Gwyneth, we think that this Leather Biker Jacket ($170.94) from Asos would look great with Banana Republic’s Knit Legging ($39.50) and these Leather Strapped Lace-Up Ankle Boots ($78.63) by Asos Ace.

STYLE TIP #4 / Give your outfit a sexy edge by pairing leg-lengthening ankle booties with a bright bandage dress: Jessica Stroup has given her look a playful-yet-sexy edge by adding a bright pop of color, then adding a pair of ankle boots to show off her legs. We like layering American Apparel’s Micro-Mesh Long Sleeve Mini Dresses ($42) over a mini dress of the same color, then adding Joan & David Collection’s Hartman Cuff Ankle Bootie ($240.95).

STYLE TIP #5 / Give your bohemian, 70s-inspired look a modern edge with a pair of suede ankle booties: The lovely Nicole Richie knows how to work the bohemian look, but here she gives it a contemporary feel by adding suede ankle boots. We like Sass & Bide’s Duty Calls Vest ($273) mixed with a pair of Urban Renewal’s Cutoff Denim Shorts ($28). Offset these boho elements with J Crew’s Metropolitan Suede Ankle Boots ($199.99).

STYLE TIP #6 / Counterbalance a feminine dress with a pair of tough, buckled ankle boots: Our final style tip comes from Agyness Deyn, a model who knows how to balance a feminine look by adding a punky element. This Horizontal Sequins Mini Dress ($168) by 32 Flavors will start your look off perfectly, especially when paired with Forever21’s Studded Faux Leather Jacket ($39.80) and Report’s Lyndon Boot ($129.95).

Ankle boots are so flattering and versatile, especially with black opaques like on Nicole here.

Not only is Palermo’s outfit chic and refined whilst wearing chunky booties, but she’s wearing read and blue in a way that doesn’t make her look as if she’s heading out to a Fourth of July party. As much as I try to dislike her because of her depicted attitude, she really does dress quite well.
