Style Tips: Summer 2011

There are plenty of places to find fresh outfit inspiration—whether you look to the runways, the streets, or the red carpet—but sometimes translating that inspiration into real life can be a little tricky. Happily, today’s Style Tips story is here to help! We have picked out four looks from four modish muses—Eva Mendes, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Keira Knightley, and Alessandra Ambrosio—and decoded these looks into a set of simple style tips that will see you through summer. So, read on for all the need-to-know details and make sure you take notes as there is loads of inspiration in today’s Style Tips story!

1. A fitted floral dress is perfect for sultry days.
Nothing says summer like a floral dress, but how do you make yours stand out from the rest? Answer: take inspiration from actress Eva Mendes, who wore a fitted floral dress while out and about in New York City recently. We love the way Eva tempered the bright print and figure-hugging silhouette of her dress with subtle accessories—specifically, chunky tan heels and classic sunglasses. The result is part Jackie O, part modern girl-on-the-go. To try a similar look this summer, pick up Alice + Olivia’s Full-Skirted Floral-Print Silk Dress ($550) or Eucalyptus’s Bright Floral Dress ($83.09). Then, simply add Shellys’ Tequila Platform Shoes ($70.17) and complete the look with Ralph Lauren Collection’s Rounded Cat Eye Sunglasses ($190).

2. Give 1970s-inspired pieces a modern twist.
The spring runways were overflowing with references to the 1970s and regular readers of Mama’s A Rolling Stone will know that it is a trend we are particularly excited about. We love the way British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who was spotted out and about in New York City earlier this month, has worked 1970s-inspired pieces into her look in a way that feels fresh and modern—specifically, by using bohemian pieces to “accent” her contemporary jeans-and-tee combo. Inspired? Pick up Rosie’s exact jacket—Isabel Marant’s July Embellished Cotton Jacket ($2,125)—or Bolongaro Trevor’s Darcy Silk Jacket ($470.86). Pair it with your favorite tee and skinny jeans, and then simply add Ash’s Gathered Suede Ankle Boots ($100) and ASOS’s Wide Brim Fedora ($46.14).

3. Pair a maxi dress with sandals for a low-key look.
Although summer is the perfect season to take a low-key approach to fashion, it doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your personal style. On the contrary, by taking notes from stylish stars like Keira Knightley, you can put together unfussy yet fashion ensembles in the blink of an eye! For instance, while out and about in Los Angeles last week, Keira paired a breezy maxi dress with flat sandals. The look is cool, chic and perfect for running errands or doing a spot of shopping. To try out this look, pick up Pearl’s Animal Burnout Maxi Dress ($55.40) or Gypsy 05’s Fiona Maxi Dress ($309) and pair it with Aldo’s Clerida Sandals ($40) or Kate Spade’s Indira Chain Sandals ($198).

4. A chambray shirt dress is easy and breezy.
If you are leaning towards a casual-yet-cool vibe this summer, make sure you take notes from Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio, who was spotted out and about in Los Angeles earlier this month wearing a chambray denim shirt dress and leather sandals. We like Alessandra’s ensemble for many reasons. It is easy and breezy, which is essential on hot summer days. Plus, not only does it look effortless, but it actually is—this is a look you can just slip straight into. With that in mind, pick up Alessandra’s exact dress—Genetic Denim’s Sylvia Shirt Dress ($231)—or Sandro’s Respire Denim-Effect Shirt Dress ($335). Finish your look with NDC Made By Hand’s Jessica Flat Thong Sandals ($265) or Forever 21’s Wrapped Thong Sandals ($15.80).
